Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon will be Paul Klein, a partner at Tri-Strategies LTD, a government relations and public affairs firm with offices in Reno and Las Vegas. He will be lobbying on behalf of Compassion & Choices for medical aid-in-dying legislation due to be introduced during the 81st session, which begins February 1st. The bill gives terminally ill people with six months or less to live the option of taking medicine to end their life peacefully.

The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association presents the third annual Northern Nevada CycleNation on June 4 at Reno City Plaza. The fundraiser begins at 5:30 p.m. and will include food trucks, yard games, and music. The stationary bike sunset ride begins at 6 p.m. and lasts for two hours. CycleNation is nationally sponsored by Amgen and is locally sponsored by Carson Tahoe Health.

Following a collaborative recruitment between the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and Carson Tahoe Health, Lorrel Toft, M.D., F.A.C.C., a cardiovascular critical care physician and researcher, has been recruited as an associate professor for UNR Med’s Department of Internal Medicine as well as a cardiologist on staff with Carson Tahoe Health.

WNC is providing two different one-day sessions of the required Healthcare Provider CPR (EMS 100) class prior to spring semester. This course also is a prerequisite for admission into the nursing program.

The CPR classes will be offered on Saturday, Jan. 5 and Saturday, Jan. 19. Both sessions will meet from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Governor Brian Sandoval on Monday officially signed Assembly Bill 85 into law, requiring all Nevada students to receive instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, also known as CPR, and the use of an automated external defibrillator before graduation from high school.

This event may not be as exciting as Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs triumph over the Cleveland Indians, ending a 108 year title drought, but anyone who ever attended Carson High School or Douglas High School knows that its rivalry has lasted equally as long.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval officially signed Senate Bill 196 into law Wednesday, creating a statewide stroke system of care and paving the way to help save thousands of lives each year.

“We’re very pleased to see this important bill become a law. UPDATE: A funeral service for Janice R. Ayres, a longtime Carson City resident and champion for the elderly and disabled in Nevada, will be held today, Friday, in Carson City at the First Presbyterian Church on the corner of Musser and Division streets.

A gathering for family and friends of Ayres will follow at Cafe at Adele's, 1112 North Carson Street.

Ayres was 92 when she died May 27, 2013.

Janice R. Ayres, a tireless advocate for the elderly and the disabled, an unshakable Democrat and former member of the Carson City Board of Supervisors died Monday morning at Carson Tahoe Hospital after battling cancer. She was 92.

Ayres was the executive director of the Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program, a position she held since 1979. RSVP Board member Charlie Abowd confirmed her passing and said directors will meet Tuesday afternoon to discuss arrangements.

CARSON CITY – Republican state senators who are refusing to go along with a call by Democrats to increase funding for the state budget say bills they have sponsored are being held hostage as a result.
Sen. Barbara Cegavske, R-Las Vegas, said Assembly Democrats, who have a 26-16 majority, “called back” seven Senate bills that had already been voted on and sent to the Senate for final action.
