Senator Square: Rivalry between Carson and Douglas spreads to school staffs

The staff of Carson High School and Douglas High School have agreed to a rivalry basketball game to be played Nov. 19 at DHS. The staff basketball game is a fundraiser for the Peace Officer’s Memorial Fund.
Multiple members of each of the school’s staff will be on hand to battle it out on the basketball court and continue the rivalry, but for a good cause. Come support the Senators or the Tigers and be sure to wear your favorite school’s colors.
The game begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students with a school ID. For questions about this event, please contact Ann Britt at 283-1910.

Choral Department News
The following was submitted by Mr. Sonnemaker, choral department instructor at Carson High School. Seven outstanding members of the Carson High School Choral Department were chosen by audition to be members of the American Choral Directors Association Western Division Honor Choirs! The Western Division includes Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah. Robert Bowman, Katherine Byington, Katasha DeGraw and Wesley Sonnemaker will all perform in the Senior High School Honor Choir. Rebecca Del Porto and Cassidy Painter will be performing in the Junior High School Honor Choir and Stephanie White will be performing with the Youth and Treble Honor Choir. These ensembles will perform in Pasadena in February at the Western Division Convention of the ACDA.

All of the ensembles in the choral department will be performing Holiday Concerts during before the CCSD Winter Break. These performances take place at the Carson City Community Center at 7 p.m. Admission for these concerts is a suggested donation of $4 per adult or four cans of food, $2 for students, and $1 for CHS students with an activities sticker on their ID. Each year the collected canned goods are donated to the Ron Wood Family Resource Center here in Carson City. The Musical Theater Concert will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 8 and the Choral Ensemble Concert on Wednesday, Dec. 9. All CHS Choral Department Alumni are invited to join us on stage for the traditional singing of the Hallelujah from Handel’s Messiah at the conclusion of the concert.

You can also enjoy the Chamber Choir in their Victorian Costumes singing Carols and other Holiday selections at the Annual Carson City Tree Lighting in December!

This year the CHS Choral Department continues the Madrigal Dinner tradition. On Saturday, February 13, in honor of Valentine's Day, we will be presenting a Royal Dinner and Silent Auction complete with ensemble performances and a Medieval Style Turkey Leg Dinner prepared by the CHS Culinary Arts. The dinner and show take place on campus in Senator Square and will begin with an auction preview at 5:30 pm. Tickets are available through the choral department for $20 each if purchased before Feb. 1. Tickets will be available after Feb. 1 for $25 until sold out. Limited seating is available for our one show so be sure to purchase your tickets early.

Essay Contest Winners
In this year's 2015-2016 School Board Sponsored American Citizen Essay Contest, open to all freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors at Carson High School, three freshman Honors English I students took first, second, and third place. This year's topic was the Bill of Rights, and students had to respond to "In your opinion, what is the most important freedom in the Bill of Rights?" The winners this year are Alan Moises Fernandez Garcia, Karla Torres, and Angela Cirone. Additionally, each of the winners will be announced at the Nov. 10, 2015 Carson City School Board meeting.

Culinary News
Carson High Culinary students are working with local ranchers and farmers to follow the flow of our food sources. Sunny Day Organic Farms farmer Rebekah Stetson brought goats to CHS to talk about goat milk, we milked the goats, then took the milk and made goat cheese with it.

PE Department Request
The PE department is looking for a washer and dryer donation in good condition. Preferably a large capacity set. Please contact Ann Britt at 283-1769 for more information.

RED Remembers Vets
Monday and Tuesday during lunch in Senator Square, RED club (Remember Everyone Deployed), will have thank you cards available for students to write a note of thanks to our active servicemen in honor of Veteran's Day. Contact Ms. Cadwell for more information about this club or event.

Speech and Debate Thanks

FBLA News

Student of the Week
This week’s student of the week is Chance Smith. Chance always tries his best in all of his classes. Chance handles being a student athlete and other obstacles and still manages to keep good grades! Thank you Chance for all your hard work at Carson High!

Senior Spotlight
This week’s senior spotlight shines on Vanessa Torres. Vanessa is an excellent student, earning herself a 4.525 GPA while being involved in several activities. Vanessa has been a swimmer for Carson High School during all four years of her high school career. She has also been a member of the National Honor Society, Link Crew, and Leadership, serving as this year’s student body treasurer.

Vanessa spends much of her free time volunteering at the Latino community center, tutoring second language learners in English. Vanessa enjoys traveling. She has visited Italy, and is joining several other students on a trip to Germany later this year. Vanessa plans to study graphic design in New York or Boston. Having spent three years studying graphic design at Carson High School, and working on her senior project shadowing editors in the graphics department at the Nevada Appeal, Vanessa is well on her way to a career working as a magazine editor or working for Google. Congratulations Vanessa! Carson High School is proud of you and wishes you luck in your future.
