It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

But this fire season, the Nevada Division of Forestry and NV Energy are using a different kind of fire prevention technology — a herd of more than 300 goats.

NV Energy and Nevada Division of Forestry have partnered to reduce the risk of wildfire in Carson City in the Clear Creek watershed through targeted goat grazing. More than 300 goats from High Desert Graziers in Smith Valley, NV, will be grazing on over 100 acres of private property off of Highway 50 through September and October of 2020 in an extreme wildfire risk area.

In addition to the many adaptations local 4-H programs have made in Nevada communities the last couple of months amid COVID-19 to keep 4-H youth engaged, the Nevada 4-H Youth Development Program has developed a variety of activities to engage 4-H youth throughout the state during the summer months.

RENO — To adapt to the recent restrictions amid COVID-19, the Nevada Junior Livestock Show will hosts its annual livestock show online this Monday through Friday, May 4-8. Youth ages 9-19 throughout the state and parts of California will be judged on their showmanship and knowledge of their chosen animals through videos they submitted online.

Even with the stay-at-home order in place, businesses, families and youth can engage in a number of educational activities online to enhance their daily lives and help themselves, and others, through these challenging days. Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, University of Nevada, Reno Extension faculty, staff and volunteers have been hard at work to bring educational workshops, programs and resources useful during this time, into Nevadans’ homes.

The Carson City Fair is upon us this weekend, bringing fun new activities that are certain to become traditions for Carsonites young and young-at-heart!

Finishing touches are being done on Schulz Ranch Park, located on the south side of Carson City in the newly created subdivision at the east end of Topsy Lane.

The Schulz Ranch Park is so named because once upon a time, the area was a massive ranch owned by the Schulz family, along with Henry Dangberg of the Minden Dangberg Ranch family, who sold his holdings in the area to the state for what is now the Nevada Correctional Center.

With a windy cool down headed our way, activities around the Carson City area Wednesday, June 26 will make for a breezy good time. Heading into Tuesday, June 18, 2019 we're looking at continued warming around the region with a daytime high around 91. Temperatures are expected to actually lower toward the end of the week. Events around town Tuesday include a Muscle Powered walk, hike and bike ride, yoga, exercises for the mind and body hosted by the Carson City Emblem Club, political gatherings, art activities and more.

Carson City University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with Carson City Parks and Recreation and Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch, is offering two weekly sessions at Silver Saddle Ranch, 2648 Carson City Road in Carson City, for youth who are not able to keep or raise a small farm animal to experience working with either rabbits or goats. Area 4-H leaders will bring their animals for attendees, 9 – 14 years of age, to work with in these hands on day camps.

Carson City Cooperative Extension’s Capital City Farm Days is set for April 11-12, 2019. This popular annual event for pre-K though 5th graders takes place at Fuji Park Exhibit Hall and Carson City Fairgrounds.

The second annual Carson City Fair brought local youth in agriculture, live music, home craft exhibitors, antique tractors and much more than last year. The fair provides a venue for local youth enrolled in 4-H, FFA and Grange to showcase their agricultural projects.

Friday morning started the Carson City fair's weekend, with events such as the popular dog show, the beginning of the silent auction, and the Youth Livestock competitions.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension presents the 2018 Carson City Fair July 25-29. The event, held at Fuji Park, 601 Old Clear Creek Road in Carson City, is put on in partnership with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the Northern Nevada Antique Tractor and Engine Club, and others to celebrate youth and agriculture.

It’s going to be a chili weekend, and that has nothing to do with the weather. The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. Families will have a hard time choosing between the Cops and Kids Open House and Safety Fair at the Sheriff’s Office and the ‘Kids to Parks’ Day activities at Silver Saddle Ranch. School-age youth will be showing their project animals at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center during University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Washoe County 4-H Livestock Show, 9 a.m., April 15.

On September 15, 2017 the annual Nevada bear hunt season opens, and this year 45 hunters have been issued tags to participate in the season that lasts until Dec. 1, or until the quota of 20 black bears has been met, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife. The quota in 2016 was 41 bears.

Thursday was Agriculture Day at Empire Elementary School in Carson City. Woody Worthington, president of the Carson and Douglas County Farm Bureau, helped coordinate with the Nevada Department of Agriculture and several local agencies to provide the experience for students.

The 14th annual Cops and Kids Open House at the Carson City Sheriff's Office (CCSO) started at 10 a.m. Saturday morning and runs until 2 p.m. today.

The Littlest Things in Carson City is more than a petting zoo, it’s a refuge. You’ll find ponies, goats, puppies, ducks, and more at this great non-profit rescue and they are always looking for animal-loving volunteers. Stop by their open house/volunteer orientation this afternoon to check it out. It’s Tartan Day at the Legislature, so don’t be alarmed if you see a few kilts around town. Karaoke at Jimmy G’s, live music at Glen Eagles and Living the Good Life, and Bike Night at Battle Born Harley are just a sample of tonight’s offerings. Just like that, the season has changed. Keep a coat handy, Carson City, anything can happen now. Beach weather or blizzard: September keeps us on our toes. Battleborn Harley on Research Way is hosting one heck of a Street Vibrations party: live music, demos, and vendors galore. Swing a club for the Western Nevada College Foundation at Silver Oak Golf Course. Southbound Train arrives at Living the Good Life for an outdoor show, followed by a night of dancing. Uncle Funkle is always a fun time: find them at the Carson Nugget this weekend.

I can understand if your plans for the weekend include sitting half-naked in front of a swamp cooler with an icy beverage. It has been quite roasty these last few days. Let me, however, attempt to lure you out with this weekend’s event list; there is plenty of fun to be found around the valley. Some of your options even include air conditioning and icy beverages.

It is finally Friday. Leave the workweek behind and go have some fun. The Carson Nugget is a one-stop shop for a good time: food, drinks, comedy, and then a late night DJ all under one roof. Check out local favorites, the Whitehats, performing at Westside Pour House. Don’t miss West Coast Swing night at Yaple’s Ballroom. Karaoke lovers can choose between Carson Lanes and Whiskey Tavern.

Spring is in the air, and the Sierra Lutheran Theater Department has chosen two comedic takes on classic fairytales to celebrate.

On April 14th and 15th, the SLHS Theater Department will host their Spring Production, featuring two short plays, The Three Bully Goats Griff and The Mad Tea Party.
