Revenues show Taste of Downtown delivers again for Carson City’s AEDV
Local restaurants and eateries fed thousands at the 2016 Taste of Downtown event held July 23 in downtown Carson City, generating tens of thousands of dollars for Advocates to End Domestic Violence (AEDV) and its shelter.
In its 23rd year, the annual Taste of Downtown was originally scheduled to be held toward the end of June. But the inaugural Epic Rides Carson City Off-Road mountain bike circuit took its place on the calendar, and the Taste was rescheduled for July.
The extra heat of summer and construction along North Carson Street did little to deter event-goers, who showed up in force to sample the best eats in the Nevada state capital and support a local non-profit that brings hope to victims of domestic crime.
There were 37 participating restaurant vendors at the 2016 Taste of Downtown, AEDV Executive Director Lisa Lee said, along with eight live bands to entertain a crowd that averages around 5,000 each year.
Lee said 1,700 tickets were sold for the 2016 event, but hundreds more turned out to enjoy the food, music and festivities, too.
The Taste of Downtown is AEDV’s largest benefit of the year, she said, and the funds raised go directly toward operating the shelter and support services for domestic violence and sexual assault survivors.
“Advocates relies on the support of the community to keep the shelter doors open and 24-hour crisis intervention services available to our community,” Lee said.
The 2017 Taste of Downtown is planned for July 22, said Lee, who anticipates even greater participation next year given the changes to the downtown Carson Street corridor.
“It will be bigger and better with the wider sidewalks and new businesses that will be attracted due to the downtown renovations,” she said.
Downtown Carson City was dressed with orange cones and construction tape during this year’s Taste event, but the general disarray of the streetscape along North Carson Street did little to deter the crowds or the fundraising.
Lee said AEDV raised about $60,000 from the 2016 Taste of Downtown, which is about the same as last year.
“I know it's not as much as many other events,” she said. “But it’s a great deal for us.”
Every donation is significant to AEDV, Lee said, no matter the amount. Any funds raised at a large attraction like the Taste of Downtown is money the organization didn’t have before.
“Its makes a difference – a big difference,” she said. “There has been years when the revenue from the Taste is what kept the shelter doors open.”
