The Victims of Crime Assistance (VOCA) Fund provides direct funding to victim-survivors of domestic and sexual violence (and other violent crimes) for things like mental health counseling, wage or income loss, and emergency shelter and relocation costs, to name a few of its benefits.

With the new year, a new set of laws is once again taking effect.

Of the hundreds of bills the Legislature passed in 2019, nine finally became effective either in whole or in part on Friday with the start of the new year and as the next legislative session is set to begin in February.

During the Thursday meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, a $125,000 settlement demand was approved by the Board in regards to the alleged molestation of a five-year-old child who was, at the time, enrolled at Camp Carson.

Carson City-based Advocates to End Domestic Violence will host a virtual version of its annual Light after Dark 5K/10K Walk, Run, Hike, Bike and Beyond awareness fitness event and fundraiser this Saturday, Oct. 17.

Stimulus Program Information

The coronavirus relief bill passed March 27 by Congress provides payments to individuals who make less than $100,000 a year. The payment total $1,200 for each adult who makes $75,000 or less, plus $500 per child. The payment amounts decrease if you make between $75,000 and $99,000. The income is determined by your latest tax return filed with the IRS. It will use your 2019 taxes if you have filed them already, or your 2018 taxes if you haven't. On March 15, 2020, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office was notified of a child pornography video posted to a social media account.

Deputies responded and contacted the reporting party. CCSO detectives were requested and launched an investigation. The subsequent investigation determined that a Snapchat user posted a sexually graphic video to his account and the video was made public for the suspect’s followers to view.

A Carson City man has pled no contest to one count of battery with the intent to commit sexual assault on a child under 16, a Category A felony, punishable by a term of maximum of life with a minimum parole eligibility of 5 years.

At its Program meeting on Wednesday, February 26, Carson City Soroptimist will feature John Malcolm, the Prevention Education Specialist for Safe Embrace, an area non-profit dedicated to educating the community and providing services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

A Carson City man facing charges of sexual assault and lewdness with children was found dead Thursday afternoon in Douglas County in what appears to be a self-inflicted suicide by gunshot.

Eugene Thomas Nichols Jr., 48, was arrested in mid December for lewdness with a child under the age of 14.

A 48-year-old Carson City man is facing additional counts of sexual assault and lewdness with children, as well as violating bail conditions after his initial arrest in mid-December for felony lewdness with a child.

Robin Miles, 58, was sentenced to life in prison with a possibility of parole after ten years on Wednesday after being charged with sexual assault on a child under the age of 14, lewdness with a child under 14, and child sexual abuse.

Miles plead guilty to lewdness with a child under the age of 14, and was sentenced on Nov. 20 in District Court.

Miles was originally arrested on Dec. 15, 2018 by Special Enforcement Team deputies on warrants charging him with the above offenses.

Miles was known as a local Carson City comedian prior to his arrest.

A 35-year-old Reno man was arrested by Special Enforcement Team deputies on four felony warrants including sexual assault and invasion of privacy and is being held on a $250,000 bail.

According to the report, Jonathan Keith Graves was arrested after deputies received information that Graves had an outstanding felony warrant issued on Sept. 13, 2019 for sexual assault and intrusion of privacy with an electronic device. They learned that Graves would be driving from Douglas County to Washoe County between the hours of 5 and 6 p.m.
