Chamber launches 'Shop Carson City First' campaign through Facebook, Twitter
Shop Carson City First: It's All Here!, an idea spearheaded by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce a few years ago, has taken on a new incarnation, this time using social media as a tool to spread the word about its members and the deals and services they offer.
As advertising budgets tighten, social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter have become a cost-effective means to spread the word to consumers about the latest deals and exclusive offerings in town.
Shop Carson City First: It's All Here! hopes to take its members to the next level as another service designed to spur business growth and opportunity, chamber officials said. Clicking here will take you to the Facebook page and clicking here will take you to the Twitter page.
Of the 550 or so chamber members, the idea is to highlight a member business and their special deals and promotions, said Chamber Executive Director Ronni Hannaman. By targeting chamber members, the hope is they will hit the Facebook "Like" button or the Twitter "following" button, which will then provide them news feeds and updates on Shop Carson City First members and their deals.
"I feel with the Internet, specifically Facebook and Twitter, this may be very successful. It's another avenue for our members to get the word out on their businesses, and connect businesses with services," Hannaman said. "This is one of the many services the Carson City Chamber of Commerce offers its members."
A staff person has been assigned to do the daily updates, getting and posting information from the membership and putting up the pick of the day. A chamber member will be featured each day.
According to the Facebook page, the mission of Shop Carson City First: It's All Here! is to connect and promote locally-owned Carson City area chamber members, "educate consumers on local products and services in order to build a sustainable local living economy in the Carson City area."
"A Local Living Economy ensures that economic power resides locally, sustaining healthy community life and natural life as well as long-term economic viability," according to the mission statement. "We do this by connecting the community with Chamber Members, Chamber Members with the community and Chamber Members with each other."
Hannaman is confident the new service will work, especially with restaurants and the retail community, she said.
Still, it will be up to individual members to be a part of this, contributing information and, of course, shopping in Carson City First.
"It will only be as good as the information our members give to us," Hannaman said. "The membership has to be involved in this to make it work."
