Campaign underway to collect items for Carson City homeless

Organizers of a campaign to collect items for Carson City's homeless are hoping locals will give what they can over the next two weeks as a way to help those individuals and families living on the street.
From toothpaste and toiletries to scarves, sleeping bags and socks — a number of collection sites have been made available where locals can drop off what they can, said Niki Blevins, an organizer of the Dressing the Cold donation drive, which involves organizations that provide aid to the homeless such as Friends in Service Helping, local churches, the Salvation Army and Life Changes, Inc.
The collection event runs from Monday, Oct. 15 to Sunday, Oct. 28.
The number of homeless adults and children continues to rise in Carson City. From those with mental illness, drug addiction, those who choose they don't want public assistance and remain in the camps, rising costs and shortage of rentals; too the large group that wants the help to get off the streets, said Blevins.
FISH and other organizations in our area are working on finding long term solutions to the problem. The local winter shelters will be opening on Nov. 1 to get people out of the extreme cold conditions.
Organizers are asking for community support by dropping their donations off at any of the listed locations below.
Items needed are: Blankets, sleeping bags, toiletry items, feminine hygiene, towels, socks, gloves, scarves, coats, sweaters, toothbrushes and toothpaste, paper bags, tarps, children’s diapers sizes 2 and 3, razors, deodorant, etc.
Donated items will be bagged for each homeless individual and distributed by participating organizations to those who want and accepting them.
Participating Organizations: include FISH and the Salvation Army, local churches and Life Changes Inc.
