10 percent of recent Quad County COVID-19 cases have been in fully vaccinated individuals

Since the end of September, 10 percent of COVID-19 cases in the Quad Counties have been breakthrough cases, according to Carson City Health and Human Services.

A breakthrough case occurs when an individual is fully vaccinated, but still contracts COVID-19.

Additionally, four people who have died were fully vaccinated, which amounts to .04 percent of cases, according to CCHHS spokeswoman Jessica Rapp. Of hospitalizations, 8 individuals who were fully vaccinated were listed as being hospitalized, amounting to 0.09 percent of cases.

Of the total cases reported since March 2021, 4 percent are considered breakthrough cases.

Since February 2021, Carson City makes up 4 percent of all breakthrough cases; 4 known people were hospitalized while being vaccinated, and all four deaths were Carson City residents.

At this time, it is not known what the ages were of those who were hospitalized or those who died, and it is not known whether or not the individuals suffered from any underlying conditions.

The Quad Counties are Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties.

According to the CDC, the vaccine is effective and remain a critical tool in fighting the pandemic, but they also state that no vaccine is 100 percent effective at preventing illness, according to their website.

Nationwide, over 183 million people have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The CDC received reports of 22,115 patients with breakthrough cases who were either hospitalized or had died from COVID-19, which is 0.012 percent of those fully vaccinated.

A total of 5,226 individuals have died from breakthrough cases; 86 percent of them were 65 years or older, and 17 percent were “asymptomatic or not COVID-related” for example, individuals who died of car accidents or other causes and were screened and found to have been carrying COVID-19, according to the CDC.

Those who were hospitalized amounted to a total of 16,889; 69 percent were over the age of 65, and 18 percent were asymptomatic or no COVID-related.

Early research being conducted, though more research is still necessary before anything can be confirmed, states that some vaccines may offer more protection against breakthrough cases than others.

According to recent research, individuals who received the Moderna vaccine may be less likely to experience a breakthrough infection. The study, conducted by researchers at the Mayo Clinic Health System, compared rates of COVID-19 infection among fully vaccinated adults; the study showed that both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines were highly effective against severe infection and hospitalization.

However, the study also showed that that in Florida during July, the rates of breakthrough infections for those who received the Moderna vaccine were approximately 60 percent lower than those who received the Pfizer vaccine, according to the study.

CCHHS did not provide which vaccine those individuals who were hospitalized or died within the Quad Counties were inoculated with, whether it be Pfizer, Moderna, or the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

Statewide, there is a 620 average of new daily confirmed cases; there have been 424,995 cumulative cases in Nevada as of Thursday.

CCHHS will continue to update COVID-19 trends and cases on a weekly basis. See https://www.gethealthycarsoncity.org for more information.
