Chinese herbal medicines workshop offered through Western Nevada College
With an expanding public interest for alternative health care, domestic production of Chinese medicinal herbs offers a new and untapped market to Nevada farmers.
The Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute offers a workshop, “The Business of Chinese Herbal Medicines,” Saturday, Nov. 2, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., at the WNC Carson Campus, 2201 W. College Parkway, Carson City. Cost is $45 for those registering by October 25, $55 afterward.
Registration includes a copy of "The Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm, A Cultivator's Guide to Small Scale Organic Herb Production." Lunch is included. Seating is limited, and registration is required.
This workshop is a primer for commercial growers interested in diversifying farm operations with an Asian medicinal herb farming and/or plant nursery component. It will explore the opportunities and risks of this market for Nevada producers. Topics will include marketing and sales; production, harvesting and post-harvest handling; top 50 crops for Northern Nevada and more.
Featured speaker Peg Schafer is owner of the Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm outside Petaluma, Calif. The primarily educational and research farm has grown more than 250 different Chinese herb crops over the past 15 years. Schafer is the author of The Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm, A Cultivator's Guide to Small-Scale Organic Herb Production." Her focus is on growing the highest quality and most efficacious Chinese herbs possible. She has lectured and taught across the United States.
