CARSON CITY — With Breast Cancer Awareness Month underway, the Nevada Health Centers Mammovan is celebrating 20 years of service with screenings this week, including one in Carson City on Monday.

This fall, bring home the beauty of Nevada’s natural landscape! Operated by the Nevada Division of Forestry, the State Tree Nursery in Washoe Valley has a great selection of Nevada-friendly plants available for purchase. All plants are grown and maintained at the nursery and are conditioned to survive Northern Nevada’s cold winters and hot, dry summers.

Placer County, a 1,400-square-mile destination in Northern California, is inviting responsible leisure travelers in accordance with the California Department of Public Health and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travelers are now permitted to safely enjoy the diverse geography encompassing a range of cities from Olympic Valley to Foresthill, and Auburn to Roseville this fall.

On Wednesday, June 17 at 3:25 p.m. Lyon County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a structure fire near Main Street and US Highway 50 in Dayton.

While Lakeview residents in Carson City may be used to deer and the occasional bear, they were in for a new surprise visit from a flock of fire fighting sheep Friday evening.

According to resident Wade Olds, the neighbors believed the shepherd had fallen asleep and his flock ran away, something straight out of a nursery rhyme.

My friend Julie from Incline laughingly asked me recently if she could come garden at my house since her property was buried in snow. While that’s not feasible, it got me thinking. Others may wish they too could garden during these “Stay at Home” times but not have space for an in-ground garden and need to garden indoors, on a patio or on a porch.


I’ve been watching the apple buds, waiting to see swelling begin, waiting for color to start showing. Last week I was excited to finally see a bit of color. Then, snow and overnight lows in the low twenties hit, which is just like last year, when we had no apples. I hope the cold doesn’t kill the blossoms and my apple crop again this year.

I saw the darndest landscape last week. I was in Incline Village at a friend’s house that backs up to Tahoe Boulevard. My friend said, "Look at the neighbor’s back yard; you won’t believe it!”

Sandra Louise Osheroff, aka Sandy, nanny, and mom, a mother, bookkeeper, dog lover and community mover and shaker, adored by many, feared by some, died of cancer on January 20, 2020 in Carson City, Nevada at the age of 82.

CARSON CITY — The Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department is pleased to announce the Ross Gold Park Playground Project has been completed and the new universally accessible playground is now open to the public.

With summer in full swing, our life-patterns often change. With vacations, family obligations, child care needs,etc. our schedules often change during the summer months. This might make it difficult to find time to pause, to take some time to be with God among a community of fellow God-seekers.

I bumped into my friend Cat at a nursery buying marigolds to solve a problem her lilacs were having. She said something was eating the leaves along the edges leaving sharp-edged cutouts. She said someone swore that marigolds planted around the base of the shrubs would solve the problem.

University of Nevada Las Vegas is working with the Nevada Department of Education to learn more about what parents with young children need in Carson City!

Fifth-grade students at Empire Elementary School in Carson City learned about the decline in monarch butterflies due to development and use of pesticides. Through their studies of the impact on milkweed and nectar sources, which are a vital part of the monarch habitat, the students wanted to help with conservation efforts.

I just returned from Orange, Virginia from a conference held at Montpelier, former US President James Madison's estate. I was chosen among applicants to attend this conference because I think our community needs to know the cool educational opportunities in which teachers are embarking. The conference covered “Gender, Sexual Identity, and the Constitution.”

The next meeting of the Board of Supervisors will be held Thursday, March 21, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the community center located at 851 E. William Street.

Items on the docket include runaway youths, the Ross Gold Park Playground Replacement and ADA Access Project among others.

UPDATE 4:25PM: Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is currently working on its master plan for Ross Gold Park. Replacement of the aging picnic shelter will be addressed in the master plan.

CARSON CITY — The Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will begin demolition on the existing playground and picnic shelter at Ross Gold Park beginning March 25. The playground is over 25 years old and does not meet current playground safety guidelines.

The Carson City Band Association will host its third annual night of music, food, and fun to raise funds for Carson High School band programs. Guests will be treated with an intimate evening of performances from talented musicians from Carson High and the community.

Both Carson High School Wind Ensemble and Concert Bands achieved superior ratings, the highest possible rating.

Twelve bands from Churchill, Douglas, Fernley and Dayton competed in the Northern Zone Nevada Music Educators Association High School Band Festival at the Carson City Community Center on March 7, 2019.

Valorie Jean Turley left our presence Sunday, January 13, 2019. Valorie leaves three children, Jeremy Houston Sheldon, Jerrad Joseph Sheldon, of Carson City, Nevada; and Kourtny Jean Sheldon of Las Vegas, Nevada. As well as her three children, she leaves a daughter in law, Veronica (Mrs. Jeremy Sheldon) and beloved grandchildren,
Helen Bernice Sheldon and Garrett Sheldon.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in collaboration with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, will offer a series of eight classes for those in the green industry beginning Jan. 29. The program benefits people wanting to enter the industry, beginners in the industry and established industry professionals.

Winners of the 91st National FFA Nursery and Landscape Career Development Event held in Indianapolis were announced at the annual awards banquet, and students Connor Arnold, Alexsandra Knowlton, Maritza Filson, and Hayden Story took home some medals.

CARSON CITY — John Christopherson has been named Deputy Administrator of Operations for the Nevada Division of Forestry, the state's forester and fire warden announced Thursday.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Division of Forestry announced Monday that applications are now being accepted for the Community Forest and Open Space Program competitive grant funding. CFP provides funding for the acquisition of private forest lands for public use. Funds are provided by the U.S. Forest Service.

Residents of local northern Nevada communities are encouraged to help keep their neighborhoods safe from wildfires by participating in “Junk the Junipers" on May 12 with drop off locations in Washoe Valley and Silver Lake.

CARSON CITY — Nineteen Carson High School Capital FFA students yielded bushels of awards at the Nevada State FFA Conference held at the University of Nevada Reno March 20-24. Most notably, the CHS Career and Technical Education students were honored with the Best Dressed Chapter Award, recognizing the chapter as the most professional chapter at the conference.
