What's happening around Carson City on Tuesday, May 14

One of the great things about our high desert climate is is how quickly conditions can change. Heading into Tuesday we're looking at breezy conditions and sunny skies, with a shift in the weather Wednesday. Here's what's happening Tuesday:

— Single lane closures on U.S. 50 in East Carson City. 8 to 3 p.m. Single lane closures will take place on U.S. 50 in eastern Carson City May 14-16 as the Nevada Department of Transportation fills roadway cracking. Sections of U.S. 50 between Asphalt Drive and College Parkway in eastern Carson City will be reduced to one lane from approximately 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily May 14 through May 16. Motorists are advised to give extra travel time and to anticipate travel delays of up to 30 minutes. As part of continuing routine roadway maintenance, NDOT maintenance staff is filling age-related cracking of the highway surface to provide a smoother driving surface and preserve the highway. The road work schedule is subject to change.

— Tuesday Morning Walk: Linear Ditch Trail West hosted by Muscle Powered. 9 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for its Tuesday weekly one hour walks to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet in the parking lot at Governor's Field on Evalyn Street off of Roop Street. This is a pavement path. Water and closed-toe shoes required. All walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths. If it rains, snows, or trail conditions are not safe, meet at the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center (MAC) at 1860 Russell Way. Contact Vickie Doenges at 801-641-1620, if you have any questions.

— Computer Classes for Beginners at Carson City Library. 11:30 a.m. Various computer topics will be taught every week, including Mouse & Keyboard; Files, Folders, and Programs; the Internet; Email; and Windows 10. — Ladies’ Mountain Bike Ride. 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Muscle Powered hosts the Ladies’ Mountain Bike Ride every Tuesday evening. Enjoy the great outdoors with the ladies of Muscle Powered and the Senators Cycling Team. Helmets are required. Meet at Foothill Drive, also known as Pooh Corner.

— Tuesday Evening Hike: Goni Road hosted by Muscle Powered. 5:30 p.m. Join Muscle Powered for its free leader-led hikes each Tuesday evening to enjoy Nevada outdoors! Meet just east of the gates for the Cinderlite mine on Goni Road. Water and sturdy closed-toed shoes are required. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Tuesday evening hikes begin at 5:30 pm and will be 4-6 miles in length. If it is raining, snowing and/or conditions of trail is not safe, hikes will be cancelled. — Tuesday night archery shoots return to Carson City's Centennial Park Archery Range. 5:30 p.m. Every Tuesday evening, 5:30 to dusk, the Clear Creek Bowmen host its Tuesday Night Archery Shoots at the Centennial Park Archery Range in Carson City. Both traditional and 3D targets are available. The target range is open shooting for use at no cost. There is a $5 fee (kids 17 and under are free) to shoot the 3D animal targets. We have archery equipment, volunteers and instructors to get you started. Come on out and join us. It’s a great way to experience the world of archery. Open to all ages. — Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction class. 6 p.m. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction was developed at the University of Massachusetts by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn. With over 30 years of research, this program has proven results. The course gives you will learn tools that will help you approach your life with more composure, energy, understanding and enthusiasm. Through learning mindful meditation techniques, you will develop more capacity for coping with short and long-term stressors in your life. In addition, this program can help people to develop the ability to manage and reduce pain levels. Through weekly homework, you will improve your focus, resilience and capacity to recover more quickly from life’s challenges. — Carson City group offers support, education to parents with children who have addictions. 6 p.m. A support group is restarting in Carson City for family members who have loved ones struggling with addictions. The group meets at a new location on Tuesday nights, 6 p.m. at Partnership Carson City meeting room at 1925 N Carson St. PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones) is a support group of parents helping parents. We meet every week to offer education and support for parents or spouses dealing with an addicted family member. PAL is a faith-based Christian organization and our mission is to provide hope to families through education and support. — Empty Bowls Open Studio at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 6 to 8:30 p.m. Create an empty bowl to donate to charity, instruction will be offered to create and paint a bowl or create something on our own during open studio session. Open studio time is free of charge and open to the public. 1215 S. Carson St., Carson City.

— Mile High Jazz Band Presents Big Band Jazz tonight at Living the Good Life. 7:30 p.m. The Mile High Jazz Band will perform an all-instrumental program highlighting the talents of several soloists from the band at Living the Good Life Bistro, 1480 N. Carson Street, in Carson City on Tuesday, May 14, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is free, donations welcome. Dinner and late night menus are available. The band will play big-band favorites, including "Love for Sale," "Gorilla Man Blues," and "Count Bubba," plus tunes recently added to the band's repertoire, including an arrangement of "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges' classic, "Jeep's Blues." Featured soloists include Bill Melendres and Joi Cerveri on trumpet, Derek Fong and Jacob Richetta on tenor sax, Rich Davis on alto sax, Liz Eubanks on bari sax, and Don Smaltz on trombone. The performance is funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. — Nevada Artists Association Presents: Landscape Show. Daily. Stop in and enjoy the diverse artwork on display from Nevada Artists Association (NAA) Members with featured artist Walter Daniels. With a current membership of 120-plus, boasting over thirty new members in the past few months alone, this show promises to be one for the books. — Dance Workshop for Couples at Yaple's Ballroom. In this beginner level workshop you must have a partner in this class, we will not be rotating. It can be a friend, husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, you just have to have a buddy with you to be your partner. We are going to learn the style of dance of Night Club Two Step and some other exercises that will help you with your connection to your partner. $20. — Nevada Arts Council Presents: Facts and Figures. Daily, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Las Vegas artist Lolita Develay’s works consists mostly of oil paintings and watercolors executed in a trompe l’oeil (deceives the eye) intertwined with abstract features. She is currently exploring prevailing social values in American mainstream culture. These paintings embody her ultimate desire for lush surfaces and the luxury of time that allowed them to be created. — Student art show open at WNC’s Main Gallery at Carson City campus. Daily. The artistic talents of Western Nevada College students will be on display in the college art gallery for the next month. The 2019 Student Art Show will be shown through Wednesday, May 15 in the Bristlecone Building on WNC’s Carson City campus.The exhibit features juried artwork from WNC students who were enrolled in classes during the fall or are currently enrolled during the spring semester. Students will compete for first, second and third places in drawing, painting, collage, photography, graphic art, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media. Students will also have the opportunity to price and sell their artwork. WNC’s Main Gallery is located in the Bristlecone Building and is open to the public six days a week: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. The Capital City Arts Initiative hosts its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.

— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself!
