Volunteers pull 80 pounds of poison hemlock from Fuji Park, second weed pull set for June 8
On Saturday, May 4, volunteers joined Lyndsey Boyer, the Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Senior Natural Resource Specialist and Marenna Disbro, the Carson City Weed Coalition Coordinator to help pull 80 pounds of poison hemlock around Bailey’s Pond.
The Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space department would like to extend our gratitude to the volunteers who came out to help remove this noxious weed.
Poison hemlock (Conium maculatum) is a Category C noxious weed in the carrot family.
This plant was introduced to North America from Europe in the 1800s and can be easily mistaken for several other plants in the carrot family, but poison hemlock is the only one with-purple spots on the stem.
As its name suggests, poison hemlock is in fact poisonous but only if ingested. Because this plant is listed in the State of Nevada as noxious, attempts to control and limit its spread are mandatory. Poison hemlock is a biennial plant, meaning that it lives for two years.
During its first year of life it produces basal leaves and establishes a taproot and some lateral roots up to several inches long. In its second year of life, poison hemlock bolts up to 8 feet tall and produces flowers and seeds. If the population size is conducive to hand-pulling do so during its first year of life, or at least before it produces flowers.
The Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space department in partnership with the Carson City Weed Coalition will host another weed pull along the Linear Ditch Trail on Saturday, June 8, 2019 from 9 to 11 a.m.
We will be targeting puncture vine, bull thistle, poison hemlock and musk thistle. This event is open to the public and interested participants do not need to sign-up. Our department will provide all the tools necessary, including gloves.
We ask participants to wear longs pants, long sleeves, closed toed shoes and bring a hat and sunscreen. Water will be on hand, but participants are encouraged to bring their own water.
