'Greetings From Tintab' Reno Handbell Ensemble performs Saturday at Brewery Arts Center
Tintabulations, a community handbell ensemble from Reno, presents their spring concert series to raise money for their first national tour to North Carolina.
Tintabulations will be performing “Greetings From Tintab” on Saturday, June 14, 11 a.m. in the blackbox theater of the Brewery Arts Center. Their concert weaves stories from the group’s past with modern bell literature.
Traditional folk songs, smooth jazz, and classic rock are all part of the concert, as well as impressive original works for bells written by some of the nation’s foremost handbell composers. Performing on 120 bells and chimes, the 14 talented musicians that comprise Tintabulations prove that bell ringing can be entertaining year round and not just at the holiday season.
In June, the group will be hitting the road and skies for their first cross country trip. Invited by famous handbell composer Michael Glasgow, they will present a series of concerts and workshops around North Carolina and Virginia to spread the art of bell ringing.
Since its founding in 1996, Tintabulations Handbell Ensemble (or just “Tintab”, as the members like to refer to it) has been pushing the boundaries of traditional handbell performance and entertaining audiences around the west coast. Barb Walsh, the group’s director and a local music teacher, started Tintab with a handful of ambitious high school students.
The group has since grown to include University of Nevada students, music teachers from as far away as Lake Tahoe, working professionals from around the area, and a ringer from Bishop, California.
In the past Tintab has performed the opening concert for the Handbell Musicians of America National conference, appeared with the The Reno Pops and Reno Philharmonic, and given concerts throughout Nevada, California, Oregon, Hawaii, and Disneyland.
