The Nevada Highway Patrol has released the name of the victim in a Nov. 11 motorcycle crash on Stewart Street in which a Carson City man died while attempting to cross the road in a crosswalk.

A 23-year-old transient, Sean Paul McCracken, was arrested Tuesday, 4:05 p.m. at Selby and La Loma streets on suspicion of felony possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

According to the arrest report, an officer stopped the vehicle for an expired license tag and made contact with the driver. The officer smelled a light odor of marijuana and asked the man about it. The man told the officer he had a “roach” in the ashtray. The officer asked if that was all he had. The man said yes.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin accepting reservations for the 2015 Winter Trek Conservation Education program on Monday, Dec. 15, 2014.

Teachers may reserve a spot by calling the Forest Service at 530-543-2694, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Winter Trek begins Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, and continues through March 26, 2015, weather permitting. Field trips are generally three hours long and are offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

This Friday, Dec. 12, Save Mart will match donations to Ron Wood Family Resource Center, a local Feeding America-affiliated food bank, through their Holiday "Give. Share. Care" program, for a total dollar-for-dollar matching grant of up to $5,000 for the day.

This initiative could not come at a more critical time for local food banks. Already stretched heading into the holiday season, recent cuts to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamps) significantly dented the food budgets of thousands of local, low-income households.

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu announced Tuesday that the Capital City Arts Initiative is one of 919 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant.

CCAI is recommended for a $10,000 grant to support an exhibition by artist Katie Lewis in the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. Ms. Lewis’ show will open in September 2015.

While eyes are on the significant winter storm headed for the Sierra and Carson City region, the National Weather Service warns that winds ahead of the storm may be damaging and among the strongest we've experienced in the past two years.

The improving economy is fueling an increase in sales tax revenues. That, combined with ongoing business expansions in Carson City, had allowed the Board of Supervisors to lower the property tax rate. We lowered the property tax rate by $.02/$100 of assessed value in 2014. Two new members of the South Lake Tahoe City Council were sworn in Tuesday as was a longtime council member who was reelected, plus the city's clerk and treasurer. The council also agreed to retain its current mayor, Hal Cole.

Councilmember Tom Davis was reelected in the Nov. 4 General Election and Wendy David and Austin Sass were both newly elected and all will hold their seats in City Council through November 2018. A Carson City man was arrested early Tuesday morning in 1500 block Sharon Drive on a felony parole and probation charge after admitting that he had smoked methamphetamine, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Arrested was Galvin Knight. He was taken to jail and is being held without bail pending a hearing through state parole and probation. According to the arrest report, officers responded to the Sharon Drive residence to assist paramedics on a medical call.

The Clarence E. Heller Charitable Foundation has granted the League to Save Lake Tahoe $35,000 to support its land-use planning program, which ensures strong environmental regulation surrounding development at Lake Tahoe. The foundation has also bolstered its named endowment at the League with a $200,000 donation.

Nevada Humane Society will join the ASPCA, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Subaru of America for the annual year-end Subaru Share the Love event through the holiday season. As part of this national effort, Nevada Humane Society and Michael Hohl Subaru have teamed up to create offsite adoptions at the Carson City dealership this Saturday, Dec. 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A new Tax Court Memo decision (Puentes, TC Memo 2014-224) tries to clarify the answer. The facts seem to be: L’s brother B bought a house in California in 2002 with a down payment and a mortgage loan secured by the property. B was the sole legal owner of the property. B paid all of the required mortgage payments until he lost his job. In 2010 L (and her father) lived in the house and paid the property taxes, insurance premiums and mortgage payments.

Carson High School hosted their annual Academic Letter Awards Ceremony Monday night. The ceremony began like most of its kind, except this year’s special guest speaker was Jim Wilson, our second congressional district judge.

The majority of Wilson’s speech was about the struggles his fathers encountered with a lack of education. He continued to explain that education can lead to opportunities that would otherwise be unobtainable without the proper knowledge. The story concluded with the advice to do what you love and a congratulations to all of the recipients and their parents.

A 27-year-old Carson City woman, wanted on a felony warrant, was arrested early Sunday after giving officers the name of her roommate and then running from them early Sunday morning in the area of William and Rand streets, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Kayla Lynn Olson was caught near Long Street and Wendy Lane at 1:12 a.m. after having jumped over fences in a foot pursuit with deputies, according to the arrest report. The woman was contacted after having crossed William Street with two others.

A preliminary hearing for a Douglas County man charged in the alleged mercy killing of his wife at a Carson City hospital earlier this year has been continued following a defense request citing poor health, the prosecution says.
William Dresser, 89, is charged on open murder and was set to appear Friday in Carson City Justice Court.

Two are in custody this Monday afternoon after a brief pursuit that ended when a vehicle crashed into two Carson City sheriff's patrol vehicles.

The incident happened shortly after 2 p.m. with the suspects being arrested at the intersection of Molly and Millennium streets in a housing complex located off of East Long Street. None of the officers were injured. A taser was deployed after one of the suspects attempted to flee.

A man who was walking on Interstate 580 in Reno south of Mill Street was struck and killed by a car on Saturday night, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The accident happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. NHP Troopers were dispatched to a vehicle accident involving a pedestrian accident on the freeway. The preliminary investigation details learned so far indicate a red 2011 Honda Accord was traveling southbound in the left lane on I580 just past Mill Street.

The success of the pilot program for fire cameras at Lake Tahoe has prompted the University of Nevada, Reno’s Nevada Seismological Laboratory to pursue funding to build out its fire camera network that rings the majestic mile-high lake.

“We’ve seen the system avert potentially large fires this summer at Tahoe, even with its minimal presence,” Graham Kent, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, said of the prototype system with its four cameras. “It makes sense to build this system out now to help protect the basin from devastating fires.”

Multiple feet of snow in the higher elevations of the Sierra is possible with an upcoming winter storm, according to the National Weather Service. However there is uncertainty about elevation levels with the arriving weather system, and just how low the snow levels will drop.

Carson City fire and ambulance responded to Goni and College Parkway late Sunday afternoon to a downed motorcycle rider.

Dispatch toned out emergency crews at 4:23 p.m. Reporting witnesses on the scene said the motorcyclist may have suffered a seizure. CPR was being administered. Arriving firefighters say it appears to be a medical issue and not a motorcycle accident. Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputies were directing traffic in the area.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Dec. 8-14, 2014. On Thursday, Dec. 11, Carson Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction at the intersection with Spear Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A 21-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 2:21 a.m. in the area of North Plaza and East Caroline streets on misdemeanor charges of being an intoxicated pedestrian, obstructing an officer and resisting arrest with violence, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to the 500 block of North Carson Street for a vehicle accident in a parking lot. Dispatch alerted officers that the subjects involved in the accident were confrontational and getting violent with casino security.

The Instrumental Music Department, Bands and Orchestra, is having its annual Winter Holiday Concert on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Donations are welcome. Meanwhile, Carson High School has had a number of their singing Senators recognized for their vocal talents already this year.

A two-car crash Saturday on Highway 50 in Dayton sent one person to the hospital via Care Flight with non-life threatening injuries, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The late afternoon accident tied up traffic on the highway for more than an hour. It happened on Highway 50, east of mile marker 6 and involved two vehicles, a 2002 Saturn View and a 2012 Ford Focus, said NHP Trooper Tappan Cornmesser.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office along with other law enforcement agencies throughout Nevada are participating in Joining Forces through December with the task of stopping impaired motorists.

Grant money for this event is provided by the Nevada Department of Public Safety-Office of Traffic Safety. These monies are used to pay for additional deputies who will be out looking for impaired drivers, said Sgt. Scott McDaniel of the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
