Pedestrian struck by car, killed walking southbound on Interstate 580 in Reno
A man who was walking on Interstate 580 in Reno south of Mill Street was struck and killed by a car on Saturday night, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
The accident happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. NHP Troopers were dispatched to a vehicle accident involving a pedestrian accident on the freeway. The preliminary investigation details learned so far indicate a red 2011 Honda Accord was traveling southbound in the left lane on I580 just past Mill Street.
At the same time an adult white male was walking southbound in the left travel lane of I580 ahead of the Honda. The Honda struck the male throwing him onto the inside shoulder of I580 southbound. The driver stopped to check the status of the pedestrian, called 911 and stayed on scene to cooperate fully with the investigation.
The pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene. Alcohol or drugs are not a factor in this unfortunate event. The speed limit in this area of I580 is 65 mph and there is spot roadway lighting in this area of Interstate 580.
The name of the pedestrian is being withheld until family can be notified.
