Capital City Arts Initiative Awarded National Endowment for the Arts Grant
National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu announced Tuesday that the Capital City Arts Initiative is one of 919 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant.
CCAI is recommended for a $10,000 grant to support an exhibition by artist Katie Lewis in the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. Ms. Lewis’ show will open in September 2015.
Ms. Lewis will create an installation in the gallery using common materials pins, paper, and threads. He art appeals to a wide audience but has an edge brought by the meticulous and intricate structures that she creates directly on the gallery walls. Her work draws the viewer in and begs the question: “how did she do that?” Ms. Lewis lives in Reno.
NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, "I'm pleased to be able to share the news of our support through Art Works including the award to CCAI. The arts foster value, connection, creativity and innovation for the American people and these recommended grants demonstrate those attributes and affirm that the arts are part of our everyday lives."
CCAI board president, Kevin Hill, said “We are thrilled with the National Endowment for the Arts grant. The NEA’s acknowledgement and encouragement is extremely important for our organization and for our town.”
Art Works grants support the creation of art, public engagement with art, lifelong learning in the arts, and enhancement of the livability of communities through the arts. The NEA received 1,474 eligible applications under the Art Works category, requesting more than $75 million in funding. Of those applications, 919 are
recommended for grants for a total of $26.6 million.
