Sunday Bingo at the Carson City Senior Center

The renovations to the Carson city Senior Center are finally wrapping up. Sunday BINGO will be returning, starting on August 13, and the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month going forward.

A man was arrested Sunday for suspicion of open murder and arson following an investigation into a fire intentionally set at a Fernley residence Saturday in which a woman was found dead, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.

Just when I thought we had vegetable protection handled with all the cages we rebuilt last week, I found my basil leaves riddled with holes with barely any leaf surface left. As I looked more closely, I discovered caterpillars, mostly on the undersides of the leaves.

An Excessive Heat Warning and Heat Advisory continue Sunday into Monday evening for the region. The Excessive Heat Warning is for western Nevada, where high temperatures of above 100 are expected.

At 11:20 a.m., first responders were dispatched on report of a car on fire at the intersection of Spooner Junction and S. Carson St.

On Sunday, July 16, take a wildflower hike through the Carson Pass at the top of Highway 88.

The flower hike with a docent in Meiss Country beginning at 10 a.m.

On Friday, the Carson City Moose Lodge 2709 hosted their second annual wine train event in Mills Park from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosted their two-day 20th annual motor officer training at Battle Born Harley Davidson on beginning Friday.

This training event allows motorcycle officers, civilians, and retired military members from Nevada, California, Arizona, Utah, Washington and some places in Canada, to come together, learn new techniques and learn new safety skills.

Speaking at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Jodi Miller, center manager for Night Off the Streets. NOTS works to connect clients with city agencies and non-profits to address issues that contribute to being unhoused, including medical problems, lack of affordable housing, and lost documents needed for job interviews. Miller oversees warming center operations and serves as a referral advocate to connect clients to services that help them find housing.

With so many events taking place over the last few weeks, and the launch of the Sheriff’s App the opportunity to share the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office response times did not present themselves. I am attaching the response times through the month of June. As you can see they remain low, and we continue to reduce response times in various areas of the County.

Ronnie Rector’s cheerful compositions tell a story and demonstrate her love of painting.

Rector’s show, "All Things Watercolor", will be in the Community Center’s Crowell Board Room, from July 10 through October 19, 2023. CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Tuesday, July 18, 5:00 – 6:30PM with an artist introduction at 5:30PM.

The Community Center is located at 851 E William Street, Carson City. The Crowell Board Room is open for all the city’s public meetings and upon request.

UPDATE 10:59 a.m.: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office issued the following release regarding the incident:

At 4:57 a.m., an armed robbery took place at the C.O.D Casino in Minden. Two suspects entered the casino and got away with an unknown amount of money. Shortly after casino employees called 911, a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) Deputy located and made contact with the suspect vehicle in a nearby neighborhood. As the deputy approached the suspect vehicle, an individual shot at the deputy, striking the DCSO patrol vehicle but not the deputy. The suspects then fled on foot.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisor’s meeting will take place Thursday, July 20 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Robert ‘Bob’ Crowell Board Room in the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Carson City's landfill will reopen Friday, July 14. The landfill had been closed due to a fire since Wednesday evening due to fire. The blaze, while visible throughout the area, is not a threat to the surrounding area, and no structures are damaged, officials said.

A fire at the Carson City landfill continued to burn overnight, leaving smoke visible throughout the Carson City area and into Mound House on Thursday morning. The landfill is closed today as Carson City firefighters and the Department of Public Works continue to suppress it.

A 39-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of domestic battery second offense, a misdemeanor offense, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

UPDATE 6:35PM: The fire at Old Hot Springs Road and Research Way is extinguished and crews are mopping up. Meanwhile, firefighters remain at the landfill fire, where brush crews continue to work on stopping it from spreading into brush.

UPDATE 11:13PM: Carson City's landfill will be closed Thursday, July 13 due to a fire burning in the debris area. The fire is not a threat to the surrounding area and no structures are damaged. Carson City's Fire Department and Public Works Department are actively working to suppress the fire.

Carson City Fire Department responded late Wednesday afternoon to a fire at the Carson City Landfill, 3600 Flint Drive in East Carson City.

The Nevada Department of Education and the Office of Governor Joe Lombardo announced Monday the release of the first round of $70 million in funding for the Early Childhood Innovative Literacy Program.

The funding was made possible by the passage of, Governor-sponsored, Assembly Bill 400 during the 2023 session of the Nevada Legislature. The funds can be used to support early childhood literacy and readiness programs for children under six years of age.

Atlas is one of the best dogs at the Carson Shelter. At almost 4, he is a gentle treat taker who is food motivated and loves people. He’s hiked many trails in the Northern Nevada wilderness and is so fearless!

Beginning Monday, July 17, the Blackwell’s Pond Park Playground Project will begin, with completion anticipated in late October, according to Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space. The entire playground will be replaced.

Four were rescued with two taken by Care Flight on Tuesday night following a vehicle rollover in Ash Canyon, two miles from the trailhead, according to a Carson City Fire Department battalion chief.
