Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosts 20th Annual Motor Officer Training Challenge Event
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosted their two-day 20th annual motor officer training at Battle Born Harley Davidson on beginning Friday.
This training event allows motorcycle officers, civilians, and retired military members from Nevada, California, Arizona, Utah, Washington and some places in Canada, to come together, learn new techniques and learn new safety skills.
Sgt. Matt Smith with the Traffic Management Unit at the Carson City Sheriff’s Department said, “We collectively get together, train together and build upon those skills … and push ourselves to be better and safer riders out there.”
The training event combines a mixture of “returning riders” as well as some new first-timers learning techniques in different departments.
Normally, the training event is held at Mills Park, but this year it’s Harley Davidson’s 120th year anniversary, so with the overlapping anniversaries, the two decided to collaborate. Harley Davidson wanted to work with them about promoting the officers’ event since it’s so important, according to Smith.
“We’re even going to have some [Nevada] National Guardsmen riding this event this year,” Smith said. “First year this has happened.”
The Carson City Sheriff's Department asked the Nevada National Guard if they wanted to showcase their skills here and learn more techniques for their safety techniques, and they were happy to join in.
“[This event] is really beneficial for our northern Nevada community members to come out and watch this and interact with police officers,” Smith said. “All the officers out here are more than happy to talk to the people if they have any questions about riding or learning new things. We’re here to help.”
On July 15, the event will host their annual competition, kicking off at 8:00 a.m. and ending with their classic “Last Man Standing” competition, where the last rider to stay upright without placing their feet or motorcycle on the ground wins.
Smith says the officers especially love it when the community comes out to cheer them on during the competitions against California officers.
The event continues Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.
