The Carson City School District is pleased to honor school counselors during National School Counseling Week, Feb. 5-9, 2024. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), the week will help focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and how they help students achieve school success and plan for a career.

Mile High Jazz Band will present “Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts” on Valentine's Day Eve, Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Gina's Good Life Music & Lounge, 507 N. Carson Street inside the Carson Nugget. The music is free; donations are welcome.

Western Nevada College officials have decided to close the Carson City campus and the Child Development Center on Monday, Feb. 5, because of hazardous road conditions.

Due to severe winter weather and hazardous driving conditions, Douglas County Manager Jenifer Davidson — after consulting with Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley — has authorized the closure of county offices on Monday, Feb. 5. Douglas County Schools are also closed countywide.

Carson City Fire Department and Nevada Highway Patrol responded to a report of a single vehicle rollover Sunday on southbound lane of I-580 near the North Carson ramp.

Carson City is now accepting letters of intent for the Community Support Services Grant for projects taking place July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025. Special consideration will be given to nonprofits providing mental health services.

This winter is different from last year in many ways. For one, Northern Nevada had a historically dry start, with the first snow not reaching the valley floor until well after Christmas. The weather has been warmer over all — with highs reaching 15 degrees over the average of 45 for January.

Hello fellow anglers. Welcome to winter, or is it? Our weather has been so crazy lately. A few weeks ago I was plowing snow and last weekend it was 66 degrees while I was fishing Topaz Lake in a tee shirt. But give it time. As we say in Nevada, if you don't like the weather, give it an hour or so.

As storm watch ramps up, NV Energy is asking its customers to be prepared for possible outages in the wake of the snow headed our way.

Currently, several inches of heavy, wet snow are predicted to begin falling Saturday night into Sunday morning, and will continue through Tuesday.

The Friends of the Douglas County Library will host a two-day used book sale, Friday and Saturday, February 16-17, at the Minden Library, 1625 Library Lane, Minden.

The sale will feature paperback and hardcover fiction and nonfiction books, children's books, puzzles and more. A preview sale for members of Friends of the Douglas County Library will be from Noon to 3 pm on Friday, February 16; non-members can join at the door.

UPDATE Feb. 3: Due to the oncoming storm, the fabric sale will be canceled for Sunday, Feb. 4.

The Annual 4-H Fabric Sale will be held on February 3rd and 4th, 2024 at Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, 601 Old Clear Creek Rd in Carson City. Doors will be open on Saturday from 9 am to 4pm and Sunday from 9am to noon (weather depending.)

The first Lyon County Sheriff's Office saturation patrol of the New Year was conducted last Friday night, Jan. 26, 2024. The target of the saturation patrol was the Dayton patrol zone.

This event was unannounced, and the planning for the event began in December. One of the goals of the saturation patrol is to suppress crime in the designated area, even if it is for one night.

Mile High Band Association’s 2024 Jazz & Beyond Festival Committee is sponsoring an art contest for northern Nevada artists, including teachers and students.

Speaking at the February 5th Democratic luncheon will be Carson City Library Director Joy Holt, who will provide an update on all of the library's many goings-on, as well as a run-down on some newly-acquired best sellers of special interest.

Joy's resume includes experience as a library aide, library assistant, academic student reference librarian, assistant library director, digital services librarian, assistant to the state librarian and deputy library director.

The Historical Society of Dayton Valley is hosting a movie night at their upcoming general membership meeting. The meeting includes brief announcements concerning activities of the Society. The general public is invited. It will be held at the Dayton Valley Community Center at 170 Pike Street in Old Town Dayton. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the meeting starting at 7 p.m.

A person was arrested early Thursday for suspicion of DUI, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

At around 2:35 a.m. a CCSO deputy was dispatched to the area of Blue Haven Lane for a non-injury crash. Dispatch advised the adult female driver hit a parked car and told them she was "driving drunk and hit a parked car," the arrest report states.

The Carson Valley Arts Council is pleased to present an evening with Dirty Cello. The band will perform at the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda in Minden, at 7 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2024.

On Feb. 8 at 6:30pm, the Douglas County Historical Society presents a 55-minute Chautauqua presentation of Lake Tahoe’s wealthy and eccentric George and Elia Whittell. Local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff re-enact the characters of one of the wealthiest couples on the West Coast during the 1920s through 1950s.

The Carson City School Board took time to recognize band students from Carson High School in their Jan. 23 meeting. Freshman Jacob Blandford, French Horn; Senior Drea Cabral, Clarinet; Senior Nathan Parsons, Trumpet; and Senior Tessa Payan, Percussion, all earned a spot in All-State Band, which comprises the top band students from across the state of Nevada. Additionally, Parsons and Cabral are both celebrating their sixth consecutive year being selected for an all-state ensemble.

Carson City area casinos celebrated the holidays with a double-digit increase in gambling generated revenue, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board in its December 2023 report released Wednesday.

The Carson City School District and Board of Trustees are pleading for drivers in the greater Carson City area to take extra caution in school zones, around bus stops and near crosswalks throughout the city.
