Lake Tahoe's George and Elia Whittell, the 'Accidental Conservationists' featured at Feb. 8 talk
On Feb. 8 at 6:30pm, the Douglas County Historical Society presents a 55-minute Chautauqua presentation of Lake Tahoe’s wealthy and eccentric George and Elia Whittell. Local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff re-enact the characters of one of the wealthiest couples on the West Coast during the 1920s through 1950s.
They kept an African Lion for a pet, owned over 25 miles of Lake Tahoe waterfront, built one of the most beautiful estates on Lake Tahoe, hosted high stakes poker games with the rich and famous, and unintentionally conserved a large portion of Lake Tahoe lands for the public to enjoy today.
The doors at the Museum at 6pm and admission is $5. DCHS, Alpine and Dayton Valley Historical Society members are free. 1477 Highway 395 N., Gardnerville. Please call David at 760 920-8061 for more information.
