NV Energy: Prepare for outages during incoming winter storm throughout Western Nevada
As storm watch ramps up, NV Energy is asking its customers to be prepared for possible outages in the wake of the snow headed our way.
Currently, several inches of heavy, wet snow are predicted to begin falling Saturday night into Sunday morning, and will continue through Tuesday.
The National Weather Service says that if you plan to travel, to make sure to do so before Saturday evening.
Across the valleys, there is a 50 percent chance of seeing six or more inches accumulating Saturday night through Monday morning.
The biggest impacts currently predicted will be Sunday into Monday.
According to NV Energy, they have extra crews on standby throughout the weekend to respond to any outages that may occur due to the storm.
To prepare for outages, make sure that before the storm you have handy:
- One gallon of bottled water per person per day
- Ready-to-eat foods and a manual can opener
- Flashlights
- Battery-operated radios and clocks
- Blankets
- First-aid kits
- Extra batteries
Here are some extra tips to remember before, during, and after an outage:
- Learn how to open your garage door manually
- During an outage, keep your refrigerator and freezer closed to ensure food stays as fresh as possible
- Turn off or disconnect any electronics you were using when the power went out, especially computers, to avoid the possibility of surge damage when power returns.
- After power is restored, check all frozen foods to determine the extent of thawing. When it doubt, throw it out.
Be sure to check the NV Energy Outage Center for all reported outages, which will also include the cause and estimated restoration time.
Carson Now will also be providing updates throughout the weekend and early next week regarding storms, outages, and road conditions.
