Healthy Communities of Lyon County hosts Breakfast Meeting Thursday February 8
The nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties holds a public breakfast meeting every other month.
The next meeting is Thursday, February 8, 2024 at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center.
The gathering will include two presentations. Robert Hernandez, director of the Veterans Upward Bound at Truckee Meadows Community College, will describe the program’s many services. The Veterans Upward Bound Program is a free educational program for qualified, honorably discharged veterans who need support in preparing for success in their post-secondary education and training.
Alisha Moss of Healthy Communities Coalition will explain the benefits of smoke-free public parks, and the reasons that many communities are adopting smoke-free policies. Creating smoke-free parks and recreational areas is an important step to encourage healthy behaviors and make parks places where people can expect to be free from secondhand smoke and discarded tobacco products.
The Silver Springs Community Center is on the left side of the Senior Center building at 2945 Fort Churchill Street, Silver Springs, NV 89429.
Healthy Communities is comprised of dozens of local, state, federal and tribal group partners; community volunteers; and staff members all working together on a common mission to strengthen communities in the Lyon and Storey regions by increasing access to 1) health care and prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use; 2) nutritious food; and 3) sustainable community-based opportunities that serve the common good and strengthen local assets and self-reliance.
