On Wednesday, the 18th annual Holiday with a Hero shopping spree took place at North Carson City's Walmart, serving 160 children throughout the school district.

Each K-8 student is provided with a gift card for $100 at the store so that their hero (a volunteer first responder from a variety of careers) can assist them in their shopping spree.

It’s that time of year, the Carson City Assessors Office has mailed out the 2023 Tax Assessment Roll. Did you notice a big increase? The Assessors Office has been in the process of reappraising the city. This includes the use of high resolution aerial photography.

The Nevada Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation is pleased to announce that the Board of Examiners granted the green light to implement and start building DETR’s new and modernized Unemployment Insurance system. The modernization aims to make the process of filing for unemployment easier for Nevadans.

A 34-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of felony burglary, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office report.

Austin’s House is a private non-profit dedicated to providing high-quality emergency shelter and services for abused and neglected children in northern Nevada. Each year, the House holds its annual fundraiser to provide much-needed funds for its annual operating budget.

The Carson City Elks Club is throwing a farewell party for longtime Carson City resident and character Jim Smolenski on Friday, Dec. 16 at 5:30 p.m.

Those who know "Smo" are welcome to come celebrate his moving to Arizona. Bring a potluck dish and stories to share.

The Carson City School District, on behalf of the Carson City Schools Foundation, is pleased to announce mini and department grant winners for Fall 2022. Each semester, CCSF gives back to educators and students alike. This last semester, the foundation awarded $200 mini-grants as well as up to $2,000 grants for a department, school or grade-level project(s).

A 32-year-old woman was arrested early Tuesday for a felony, non-fugitive warrant and for misdemeanor suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office report.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will be turning on the Homestead Holiday decoration lights for the remainder of this week for people to come out and enjoy! “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” took on a whole new meaning this past weekend as more than four feet of snow fell on Tahoe ski resorts, guaranteeing prime conditions for the holidays. With roads plowed, a forecast of sunshine throughout the week, and expanded ski terrain now open, Santa arrived early for winter enthusiasts and the area’s hospitality businesses.

The Nevada Department of Corrections reported a stabbing death at Ely State Prison that happened Friday, Dec. 9, 2022.

CARSON CITY — Carson Tahoe Health has announced an expansion of its Nurse Apprentice Program which allows students enrolled in nursing programs an opportunity to get ‘real-world’ experience while working alongside hospital staff. The expansion, which was made possible through the recent American Rescue Plan Act grant, will allow CTH to have 40 apprentices at all times.

In the field by 5th Street and Roop Street in Carson City, between the old tennis court and the fire station, is a gravel berm. I work in a building close by and noticed that decorated Christmas trees have been placed along the berm.

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s local housing leaders are bringing affordable homeownership solutions to all corners of the state of Nevada through the Home Means Nevada Initiative. The initiative has allocated $10 million to Nevada Housing Division and Nevada Rural Housing. These agencies are launching down payment assistance programs that will provide $15,000 in DPA to eligible first-time homebuyers.

A dental insurance reform bill has been filed by Senator Heidi Seevers Gansert (R-Reno) to raise the requirement that insurance companies must spend on patient care. If passed, at least 80 percent of the money dental insurance companies collect from patients must be spent on dental care or patients get the difference back.

Sunday's Homestead Holidays at Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City has been canceled due to conditions at the ranch from the storm overnight. Saturday's festivities were also canceled due to the poor weather conditions.

The Carson Middle School Boys 7th grade basketball team was victorious Saturday night in the 2022 Tah-Neva Basketball Tournament at the Douglas County Community Center.

The undefeated 7th grade Solons beat Eagle Valley Middle School, Carson Valley Middle School and Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School to bring home the first place trophy. The final game score against Pau-Wa-Lu was 58 to 40.

The Trail of Lights event at Washoe Lake State Park is canceled tonight, Sunday, Dec. 11, due to damage from last night's storm, according to Nevada State Parks officials.

The Carson City Senior Center will host a number of events and activities through December. Among them are free senior bus pass distribution days, holiday meals, a "know your rights" debt collection presentation and more. The senior center is located 911 Beverly Drive.

UPDATE SUNDAY: A fresh layer of snow on the ground adds to the holiday spirit as the "Santa Train," a much-loved Northern Nevada Christmas tradition, returns to the rails by train today, Sunday and again next weekend, Dec. 17-18 at the Nevada State Railroad Museum at 2180 South Carson Street in Carson City.

The train rides, which last approximately 20 minutes, are available from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Methodist Church welcomes visitors to the Living Nativity

The manger is ready, and costumes have been fitted. The Living Nativity is awaiting visitors to walk or drive through again on Sunday, Dec. 11, 6:30-8:00 pm, at the First United Methodist Church in Carson City.

Gerald Stephen “Steve” Bilyeu of Carson City passed away peacefully at his home on December 4, 2022 after a valiant fight with cancer.

Steve was born February 12, 1945 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Casper “Cap” W. and Grace Hogan Bilyeu. He graduated from Carson High School and furthered his education at Oklahoma State University, University of California, Berkeley, and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno. He was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe officially cut the ribbon on its new Lakeview Express chairlift on Thursday.

The $7.5M Lakeview zone project was the largest capital improvement project in the resort’s history and changes the way skiers and riders experience the mountain.

The Carson City Elks Lodge no. 2177 is hosting their annual Hoop Shoot fundraiser today for Huntington’s Disease research.

The fundraiser takes place Saturday December 10 beginning at 10 a.m. for children, ages 8 to 13.

On Friday, the first night of Homestead Holidays kicked off at Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City, located at 2150 Carson River Road.

Due to inclement weather, the event has been cancelled Saturday Dec. 10.

On Sunday, weather permitting, the old timey holiday celebration will continue at 5 p.m.

The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Carson City Librarian Joy Holt, who assumed the position on October 1st after serving several months as acting director. Her predecessor, Tod Colegrove, is now dean of the Albertsons Library at Boise State.

The holidays are a time to come together and celebrate with friends and family. But for families with a loved one living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, it can be an emotionally challenging time.

However, there are still ways to find joy and happiness with your loved one.

Fans of the former Carson City hockey bar the Tap Shack, located at 112 Rice Street, will be happy to find the name returned to the business, along with its new owners.

Owners Sandra and Walter Owens purchased the bar in November from the newest owners, who turned the bar into Tap @ Rice Street in March of 2021.

Sandra grew up in the restaurant business, as her grandparents owned the famous Christmas Tree Restaurant on Mt. Rose Highway.

"My first job was as a dish washer in their restaurant," Sandra said. "I've been in the industry ever since."

A 30-year-old Ely man was arrested in the 3600 block of S. Carson City for allegedly breaking a slot machine with his head.

According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched just after 10 p.m. to a local sports bar on report of a male subject refusing to leave.
