Happenings around Carson City for Monday, March 9

Heading into the start of the work week, temperatures will be comparatively cool compared to last week with daytime highs near 55. The Greenhouse Project will be in the spotlight at a Carson City Democratic luncheon, plus fitness events, West Coast swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and a Carson City Parks and Rec led full moon hike up Dead Truck Canyon. — Carson City School District kindergarten registration. Ongoing. The Carson City School District is asking parents to mark their calendars for Monday, March 2, to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2020, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2020-2021 school year. Full-day Kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools in Carson City. Contact your neighborhood school. Parents are invited to visit their child’s prospective school in person between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

— Capital City Arts Initiative to present 'Impact' exhibition featuring Lake Tahoe artist Paula Chung. Daily through May 28. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Impact" by artist Paula Chung at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The exhibition will be in the gallery through May 28, 2020. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Paula Chung’s Impact works address violence on sports fields, battlefields, and the streets. Through the use of medical imagery, she illustrates how violence affects us all.

— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'Photo Finished 2020' exhibition. Daily. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Photo Finished 2020, at the Community Development Building, the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Nine students from Carson High School’s Advanced Photography program have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public through March 26, 2020, Mondays - Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The Carson High students include Jackie Garza, Ansley Griffin, Karla Herrera, Meagan Kiesow, Kayee Konze, Kailee Luschar, Vanessa Martinez, Haley Trost, and Valerie Wamsley. The artists are all students in Kara Ferrin’s Advanced Photography class.

— Open studio basic painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King Street. Students will work on their own paintings from subject matter they have chosen. The instructor, Mark Tompkins, will work one-on-one with each student to help them complete their project from start to finish. Each student must supply their own materials. Students may choose to paint in either water colors, oils, or acrylic paints.

— The Greenhouse Project in the spotlight at Democratic luncheon. 11:30 a.m. Featured speakers at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Jon Ruiter, Executive Director of The Greenhouse Project, and Cory King, the project's greenhouse manager and garden educator. The Greenhouse Project's stated mission is "Growing, giving and teaching for a healthier, greener, sustainable community." The idea for the project germinated in 2009 when local restauranteur Karen Abowd and attorney Janette Bloom became aware of severe food shortages among some under-served segments of the Carson City community. In response they began to lay out plans, since realized, for a community greenhouse at Carson High School that would grow and distribute healthful produce. Jon Ruiter took over TGP's management duties in 2019 after a 30-year career in law and banking compliance, including 15 years working in community reinvestment and community development for banks. Over the course of his career, Jon worked with and got to know numerous nonprofits with a variety of missions, but he developed a true passion for those dealing with healthy food access, food insecurity, and the promotion of small farmers and local growers. He began volunteering with TGP in 2018 and joined the Board of Directors in early 2019. Prior to that, he had been Board Treasurer of NeighborWorks Sacramento for eight years. This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 9th, at the Carson City Round Table, 3325 Retail Drive just off College Parkway. An all-you-can-eat pizza and salad bar lunch buffet is available for $7.99, 10% discount for seniors. Water is free, extra charge for fountain drinks. Suggested donations of $5 or more gratefully accepted but are not required. All are welcome. — Monday night throwing class at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson Street. Drop in sessions are $45 or $175 for a 6 week, open start class, including open studio anytime during the 6 weeks. — West Coast Swing Dance. 5:30 to 10 p.m. at the Carson Lanes Family Fun Center, 4600 Snyder Ave. Join the High Sierra Swing Club every Monday for a night filled with West Coast Swing dancing! Beginners class at 5:30 followed by an Intermediate class at 6:30, $8 each. Free social dance following lessons from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

— Free Motivated Mondays Fit Camp. 6:30 p.m. Free group workout, full body circuit. Our mission is to get together like minded people from our community that have similar goals and are looking to make a positive change in their lives (mindset, fitness and nutrition). — Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space hosts Full Moon Hike up Dead Truck Canyon. 7:30 p.m. The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will be hosting March's Full Moon Hike up Dead Truck Canyon on Prison Hill on Monday, March 9. This hike will feature the "Worm Moon," an abandoned 1950's truck and plenty of beautiful terrain. The adventure begins at the Red House at Silver Saddle Ranch at 7:30 p.m. This hike is considered strenuous, and covers about 3 miles over rocky and sandy terrain. Registration is required online at www.carson.org/ccpr. This hike is limited to 50 participants so it is encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. Come prepared dressed for the weather and bring water, a flashlight, and good hiking shoes. Dogs are welcome but must remain on a six-foot leash during the hike. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult and capable of hiking over strenuous terrain.
