Carson City area events for Monday, March 2

The first Monday of March should bring clearing skies and sunshine after a weekend of wild weather. Activities include a discussion and documentary viewing regarding the high cost of pharmaceutical drugs, plus Read Across America storytime for young children at the Carson City Library, fitness events, West Coast swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and more.

Monday

— Carson City School District kindergarten registration begins Monday. The Carson City School District is asking parents to mark their calendars for Monday, March 2, to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2020, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2020-2021 school year. Full-day Kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools in Carson City. Contact your neighborhood school. Parents are invited to visit their child’s prospective school in person between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to provide the following required documents to register:
— Birth certificate.
— Immunization records (including Hepatitis A & B, DTAP, MMR, IPV & Varicella). Please contact your physician’s office to ensure compliancy for school.
— Proof of residency in Carson City (Utility bill, Mortgage or Rental papers, Voter Registration, etc.).
Additionally, children who will be 4-years-old by Sept. 30, 2020, and whose family qualifies under the federal household income guidelines, may apply for the district’s Pre-Kindergarten program for the 2020-2021 school year. There is limited space for Pre-K students zoned for the following schools: Bordewich Bray, Empire, Fremont and Mark Twain Elementary Schools. At this time, Fritsch and Al Seeliger Elementary Schools will not be accepting Pre-K applications.

— Capital City Arts Initiative to present 'Impact' exhibition featuring Lake Tahoe artist Paula Chung. Daily through May 28. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Impact" by artist Paula Chung at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The exhibition will be in the gallery through May 28, 2020. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Paula Chung’s Impact works address violence on sports fields, battlefields, and the streets. Through the use of medical imagery, she illustrates how violence affects us all.

— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'Photo Finished 2020' exhibition. Daily. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Photo Finished 2020, at the Community Development Building, the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Nine students from Carson High School’s Advanced Photography program have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public through March 26, 2020, Mondays - Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The Carson High students include Jackie Garza, Ansley Griffin, Karla Herrera, Meagan Kiesow, Kayee Konze, Kailee Luschar, Vanessa Martinez, Haley Trost, and Valerie Wamsley. The artists are all students in Kara Ferrin’s Advanced Photography class.

— Open studio basic painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King Street. Students will work on their own paintings from subject matter they have chosen. The instructor, Mark Tompkins, will work one-on-one with each student to help them complete their project from start to finish. Each student must supply their own materials. Students may choose to paint in either water colors, oils, or acrylic paints.

— Read Across America: Storytime for young children. 10:30 a.m. Designed for pre-kindergarten children not yet in elementary school and families. Join the Carson City Library in celebrating Read Across America with a special storytime! You'll learn all about the library with songs, stories, activities, and a behind the scenes tour of the library. Please note: Children 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. The Carson City Library is located at 900 North Roop Street.

— High cost of pharmaceutical drugs the topic at Carson City Democratic luncheon. 11:30 a.m. Mary Liveratti, former president of AARP Nevada, will lead a discussion about the runaway cost of prescription drugs at Monday's Democratic luncheon. She will present the stunning documentary Big Pharma: Market Failure, which covers the pharmaceutical industry's role in the ever-spiraling cost of medicine. The rest of the world has figured out that government action is required to rein in the cost of life-saving medications for their citizens. Unfortunately that is unlikely to happen in this country anytime soon because Big Pharma's lobbyists outnumber legislators two-to-one in Washington DC. Even the Affordable Care Act left Big Pharma untouched and did not address the cost of drugs. Only increased public awareness will move the needle on this issue, and this documentary represents a positive step in that direction. Portions of this documentary was shown at a recent Sierra Nevada Forum, and it was such a jaw dropper that Mary Liveratti agreed to show it in its entirety at this week's luncheon and lead a discussion about its public policy implications. This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 2, at the Carson City Round Table, 3325 Retail Drive just off College Parkway. An all-you-can-eat pizza and salad bar lunch buffet is available for $7.99, 10% discount for seniors. Water is free, extra charge for fountain drinks. Suggested donations of $5 or more gratefully accepted but are not required. All are welcome. — Monday night throwing class at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson Street. Drop in sessions are $45 or $175 for a 6 week, open start class, including open studio anytime during the 6 weeks. — West Coast Swing Dance. 5:30 to 10 p.m. at the Carson Lanes Family Fun Center, 4600 Snyder Ave. Join the High Sierra Swing Club every Monday for a night filled with West Coast Swing dancing! Beginners class at 5:30 followed by an Intermediate class at 6:30, $8 each. Free social dance following lessons from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
