The annual Bonfire celebration takes place by the football field tonight at 7 p.m. Western Nevada College is celebrating Constitution Day with a series of films and a student panel. Shake off the back-to-work blues at the Fox Brewpub – it’s karaoke night. Monday Night Football is back in full force. Tonight, watch the Saints battle the Giants at home on ESPN, or at any number of our local casinos or taverns.

Tornado Warning expires for Carson City, Douglas, Lake Tahoe; thunderstorms bring flooding

UPDATE 5:15PM: The Tornado Warning has expired. Flooding throughout Carson City is being reported as rush hours begins. William Street from Mills Park, College Parkway, Roop Street, and Saliman all experiencing flooding issues. Much of the heavy rain has now moved on though there are several lightning strikes still around Carson City.

The entire community is invited to attend the Open House Open Hearts Community Fair at Carson High School this evening. You’ll be treated to performances from our talented students, yummy treats created by the CHS Culinary students, and a plethora of information from community services like the library and Boys and Girls Club. Wheeled Food Wednesdays at the Brewery Arts Center is contingent on nice weather, so it’s too early to tell if the rain clouds will cooperate.
Thunderstorms developing in the Sierra, western Nevada

Chancellor, Board Chairman to Visit WNC Carson City campus to Start President Search

They will meet with the WNC Institutional Advisory Committee, Foundation and Associated Students of Western Nevada at 11 a.m. in Reynolds Center Room 102. Members of the public may attend this meeting and provide comments.
There will be an interactive video of this meeting available on the Fallon campus in Piñon Hall Room 202 to allow public comment.

I strive to make sure that my things-to-do lists reflect the many options available to you. Today, for example, you’ll find a fundraiser for Catmandu, the monthly meeting of the fly fishing club, some country line dancing, jazz and poetry, and a walk along the historic Blue Line Trail. No two Tuesdays are alike (or Wednesdays or Thursdays, for that matter), so it’s always worth checking out. Now that we are moving into autumn, the activities in Carson City change like the leaves.

Learn how to lend a hand to the next generation during a volunteer workshop at the Senior Citizen’s Center: reading help is needed and the volunteer commitment is only one hour a week. They say laughter is the best medicine, and funny-lady Kat Simmons is the prescription.

Lightning strikes were being reported throughout the area as well as rain showers in Carson City.

Slinkard Fire Update: U.S. Highway 395 reportedly open, fire at 9,000 acres
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Sat, 09/02/2017 - 11:01amUPDATE 11:30AM: Acccording to the National Wildfire Coordinating Group web site provided by the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center, the Slinkard Fire has officially burned more than 7,880 acres and is currently about 20 percent contained at this hour.
More than 600 firefighting personnel are on scene, including 15 crews, four helicopters, 56 engines, two bulldozers, and 11 water tenders.
U.S. Highway 395 is reported to be open in both directions. However, both the Nevada and California highway patrols remain on scene to monitor the situation.

The Slinkard Fire near Topaz Lake has grown to about 9,000 acres in size, but firefighters have achieved at least 10 percent containment on the blaze as of about 9 a.m. Saturday morning, according updated reports from all three major television news stations in Reno.
