Carson City weather: Sunny, breezy days ahead with potential for overnight freezing
With fall arriving in a week on Friday Sept. 22, the weather around Carson City, western Nevada and Sierra is headed for a cool down of autumn proportions beginning Monday.
Most of next week will be on the cool side, with a chance for showers and some mountain snow during the second half of the week, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Seasonable temperatures and dry conditions will prevail this weekend, however, winds are expected to pick up Sunday with westerly gusts of 20 to 25 mph expected, then becoming stronger on Monday with sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts of 35-45 mph, according to the weather service.
These wind speeds may create hazardous boating conditions across areas lakes along with a potential threat for critical fire weather conditions across western Nevada, the weather service states.
The upcoming series of cold fronts will bring down temperatures below average for much of the week. Light snow is possible in higher elevations of the Sierra, while low temperatures may dip to near freezing in some lower valleys.
The first system will sweep a cold front through Tuesday morning and will keep high temperatures in the mid to upper 60s across western Nevada with mid to upper 50s for Sierra valleys.
The next system will again provide gusty winds Wednesday afternoon with another cold front passing through the region Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Highs again will be in the 60s across western Nevada and
50s for Sierra valleys into the start of next weekend.
Night time and early morning low temperatures will dip into 30s to low 40s next week, with sensitive plants subject to frost or freezing conditions in colder valleys.
If you’re heading outdoors next week, the weather service advises to be prepared for the cooler conditions and carry some rain gear with you. Also, gardeners may want to take action to protect sensitive plants from overnight frost.
