November is a month filled with holiday craft shows, and it starts now. Check out what the Young at Heart Seniors Club has to offer at their annual show at the Douglas Community Center. Capital City Arts Initiative celebrates 15 years of bringing arts and culture to our valley: help them celebrate at the Adams Hub on Proctor and enjoy their silent auction featuring the works of several local artists.

Two of Reno’s greatest and most unique comedians are coming together for a two-man comedy extravaganza that includes sketch, stand-up, and musical numbers rolled into one amazing show.

“Nick-N-Bobby Act Weird for About an Hour” is coming to the Brewery Arts Center on Saturday, November 18th at 7:30 pm (doors open at 7:00 pm).

We’ve got a wine walk weekend coming our way, come rain, snow, or shine. This one could get a little blustery; there’s a storm moving in. I’m just grateful that Mother Nature waited until after the parade and trick-or-treat night to send us some winter.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada State Museum and Western Nevada College Latino Cohort have teamed to present an El Día de los Muertos, or, Day of the Dead, celebration with a reception Thursday evening and a full day of activities on Saturday in downtown Carson City.

A storm will move into the Carson City region this weekend bringing wind, rain and a chance of snow in the foothills and up to 3 feet in higher elevations, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Watch for the Sierra and Lake Tahoe Basin.

Everywhere you look, we are ready for Halloween: skeletons and cobwebs, pumpkins and monsters, witches and headstones. Tonight is the real deal. There have been several Halloween celebrations already, but nothing beats trick-or-treat night. Get started at the Carson Mall, then head over to the Nevada Humane Society for even more candy. The Downtown Business Association welcomes the costumed kids to their Candy Crawl. But there’s nothing quite like the historic west side when it comes to Halloween.

Join Nevada Author, Sandie La Nae and Historian, Arline La Ferry in celebrating their new book, “Weird Virginia City,” at the Gold Hill Hotel on November 18, 2017 at 4:00 pm.

This volume is the third of a “Weird” trilogy about Virginia City. It is Sandie and Arline’s seventh collaborated book, and La Nae’s sixteenth book in print.

Special entertainment is scheduled for this event: Chautauqua Performer, DebiLynn Smith; Western Performer, Doc Durden; Country & Western Musician Krista Jenkins; and “One Feather Photography” showcasing Gold Hill prints.

What a weekend. Now that Nevada Day is over, we can truly focus on Halloween. Take a trip to the hospital: Carson Tahoe is throwing its annual Spooktacular Stroll, complete with candy, prizes, a bounce house, and more. Head up to Virginia City if you’d like some thrills. The Mackay Mansion is open for its second annual haunted house, even though it’s got a reputation for being haunted year-round. Douglas kids will enjoy a Halloween party at the local Minden Library.

Nevada Day officially began Saturday morning with the annual Nevada Day Classic 8K and two-mile run/walk in downtown Carson City, followed by pancake breakfasts hosted by the Builders Association of Western Nevada and Carson Lodge No. 1, and then annual sunrise hot air balloon launch organized by Relax.

The Nevada Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. at William and Carson Streets.

It’s Nevada Day weekend, and that means the annual parade and festivities will bombard downtown Carson City with thousands of revelers. I made the decision to put all of the parade related events into a separate list for a few reasons: one, this list would be way too long otherwise; two, Halloween fun is plentiful all weekend long; and three, I want my list to be as easy to read as possible. Read on for events throughout Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton, Silver and Virginia Cities.

Finally, Nevada Day weekend is here. State offices are closed, the kids are off school, and Carson City is hoppin’. Join the Downtown Business Association for the ‘Passport to Downtown’ with live music, a raffle, craft and vendor show, and a family fun center, complete with petting zoo. Stick around for the annual fall Blinky Man Costumed Nighttime Bike Ride Pub Crawl with Lights. Halloween festivities, a carnival in Mills Park, and opening night of the La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow are on today’s list, as well.

Here is an updated parade list for all the entries in the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday. Note, there was a last-minute change in streets where the entries are supposed to line up that is different than the printed program. The change was made to accommodate some larger floats. It’s that time again. The Battle Born state celebrates its admission to the United States on the last Friday of October, with the annual Nevada Day parade on Saturday. New this year is a ‘Passport to Downtown’ event on Friday. Also new this year is the one-night-only curated art show, Capital Collage, on Friday night featuring over 20 diverse artists and organizations.

The countdown continues. Nevada Day is observed Friday, so get ready for an action-packed three-day weekend. Head down to Old Town Dayton for their annual Haunted Hayrides into History. You’ll find games, refreshments, Ghostly Pioneers, and it’s the perfect place for your costume. The Boys and Girls Club invites you to their ‘Lights on Afterschool’ event with an ice cream social, face painting, games, bounce house, S.T.E.M. labs and more. A Dodgeball battle at the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center raises money for Domestic Abuse Awareness.

Oh, wow, I just got a glance at the date. With the gorgeous weather planned for today, it’s hard to believe that Christmas is two months away. Let’s celebrate the holidays right in front of us first. The kids aren’t going to want to miss out on the Carson City Boo-nanza: trick or treating at the Community Center, crafts and activities at the Library, and Hotel Transylvania on the screen at the Aquatic Center. DJ Trivia is looking to expand their team of Trivia-masters: head to Red’s Old 395 tonight if you’d like to audition, or just play.

The 29th Carson City Chamber Leadership Institute Class of 2018 is off and running and will be learning about our city for the next 8 months.

As a highlight for the upcoming statewide art show, Capital Collage, Mark Salinas commissioned Las Vegas papier mache artist Justin Favela to create three, alien-themed piñatas. However, the piñatas won’t just be on display, they will be broken in traditional custom during the art show.

As Nevada Day 2017 approaches, it seems more important than ever to celebrate the importance of community, the goodness that exists in our state, and renew a sense of pride in our home.

At the beginning of this month, Michael Nelson of Sierra Lutheran High School was awarded “Teacher of the Month” by the Rotary Club of Carson City.

I hope you’ve got your Halloween costume ready. A week of various Halloween activities, trick-or-treats, and festivities for the kids begins tomorrow with the first ever Boo-nanza: a family-friendly collaboration between the Community Center, Carson City Library, and Aquatic Center. Tonight, the over 21 crowd gets to enjoy a costume contest at Alatte inside the Carson Nugget, with many more parties on the way.

We have arrived at my favorite week of the year. I am a great lover of all things Nevada Day, and it’s practically moments away. Luckily, we have plenty to keep us busy until Saturday. Two new art exhibits have appeared over the weekend: the annual Nevada Day Show at the Nevada Artists Association gallery, and ‘Inspirations’ at the Community Development Building, across from City Hall on Proctor.

Tricks, treats, and fun for all ages is what Halloween is about. You’ll find numerous reasons to don a costume in this year’s list of everything Halloween. Parties for the adult crowd, haunted houses, and trick or treating are just the tip of the broomstick. Everything is listed chronologically by start time. If it is located outside of Carson City, I’ve put the name of the town in bold face.

Translated to English, the La Ka Le’l Be Powwow means, “The People’s Gathering.” Organizer Martin Montgomery expects this year the name will be more appropriate than ever.

CARSON CITY — The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada celebrates the 18th Annual National Lights On Afterschool with hands-on STEM activities, games, ice cream sundaes and support from local partners and dignitaries on Thursday, Oct. 26 from 4-6 p.m. The event is open to the community.

Brooklyn Maw, herself a Carson High School graduate, has returned to lead the One Up Club at CHS. What does this say to the community of Carson City when a former student returns to become a positive influence at her alma mater, well it is the highest form of flattery and shows that CHS positively and lastingly impacts students’ lives.

Welcome back to the weekend, readers.
