The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival has buddied up with something new this year. Today and tomorrow, the Jukebox International Film Festival features fifteen contestants competing in four categories. Youth Theater Carson City and Western Nevada Musical Theater alum, Grant Davis, is back in town to show support for ‘Something Like Summer,’ the Australian musical he stars in. Make sure you’re in McFadden Plaza around 5 p.m. Davis will be performing songs from the movie and music from his debut album on the Third Street Stage.

CARSON CITY — Nevadans might be surprised to know their state is home to nearly a dozen species of owl, including the great horned owl – the largest nocturnal bird of prey in the state. Owls occupy a variety of habitats throughout Nevada but are seldom seen by the public because much of their activity occurs at night.

The individual confirmed to have West Nile Virus had the more serious form of the illness, which can impact the brain and surrounding tissues.

Mike Tice, offensive line coach for the Oakland Raiders football team brought his A-game to his 7th annual charity golf tournament weekend in June featuring the entire Raiders coaching staff, including head coach Jack Del Rio and a spate of former NFL players from around the country. The event doubled its take this year, including a match from Carson Valley Inn owner, Mike Pegram to over $300,000.

Preacher Fire in Douglas County swells to more than 1,000 acres, voluntary evacuations underway

The Preacher Fire burning in the Pine Nut Mountains has swelled to more than 1,000 acres, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. Douglas County has initiated recommended evacauations of areas at the east end of Pine Nut Road including Fred’s Street, Sandoval, Taildragger, Bluebird, and Bar-J Roads as well as the Spirit Ranch Area including Blue Sage Road, Badger Lane, Robinson Road, and Lena Lane. In addition, the Washoe Tribal Police are evacuating the Bodie Flats area in the vicinity of Courtland Avenue.

Carson City School District to offer preschool at Boys and Girls Club

The Carson City School District has partnered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada to house a new Pre-K (preschool) classroom at the Carson City clubhouse located at 1870 Russell Way. Twenty students between the ages of 4 and 5 will receive full-day instruction this school year Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
