Carson City weather: Red Flag Warning for Monday due to arriving gusty winds
Gusty winds associated with a cold front expected to arrive Monday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning for the Carson City region and much of western Nevada.
After a relatively quiet Sunday with moderate afternoon breezes, surface wind gusts on Monday are projected to range from 35–45 mph, with Sierra ridge gusts up to 75 mph, according to the weather service. The Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday. Lake wind advisories will be in effect for both Tahoe and Pyramid.
Humidity is expected to be between 12 and 26 percent, with the lowest in the Western Nevada Basin and Range.
The strongest winds and lowest humidity will persist for around 6 to 9 hours from early Monday afternoon into Monday evening. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them, the weather service advises.
Meanwhile, below average temperatures are expected from Tuesday through early next weekend, with potential for freezing in some colder valleys. Light showers are possible at times from Wednesday through Friday.
Highs may not rise out of the upper 60s to lower 70s in the warmer valleys while lows dip into the upper 30s to
lower 40s for the lower valleys, while the Sierra valleys see lows in the upper 20s to lower 30s.
For Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, Sunday and Monday's high is expected to be in the mid 70s, with lows in the mid-40s. Tuesday and Wednesday's highs will be around 70, with lows in the low 40s. Thursday and Friday's highs will be in the mid-60s, with lows in the upper 30s to 40.
