Thunderstorms developing in the Sierra, western Nevada
Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are developing Tuesday afternoon in the Sierra and are expected to move into the Lake Tahoe region, Carson City, Carson Valley, Central Lyon County, and far western Nevada later today, according to the National Weather Service.
These thunderstorms are capable of produce a half-inch of hail, brief heavy rain and wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph. The storms will be developing through 3:30 p.m. A few stronger storms with winds in excess of 50 mph and hail to dime-size will be possible late this afternoon into the evening, according to NWS in a special weather statement.
The storms are coming from the south moving in a northwesterly direction.
Heavy rainfall is occurring with some of these storms. In areas of steep terrain or wildfire burns, minor water or debris flows are possible. Drivers should slow down and turn on their headlights if encountering heavy rains.
Occasional cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms. The weather service urges people to take shelter immediately in the event of hearing nearby thunder.
The areas of concern are: Greater Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley areas, Lake Tahoe, Pyramid Lake, Mono County, Calif., Northern Washoe County, Lassen, Eastern Plumas and Eastern Sierra counties in California.
