Summer is holding on for dear life, and sending a miniature heat wave our way for this long weekend. For those of you not in Black Rock City, the Carson City region offers plenty of recreation and entertainment. Downtown will be hopping with the Farmers Market, monthly Wine Walk, and this season’s last outdoor concert at the Brewery Arts Center – and that’s just Saturday! Keep reading for three days of good times.

SATURDAY:

The Brewery Arts Center will wrap up an unforgettable season of free concerts under the stars in Carson City this Saturday with the Young Dubliners and traditional Celtic band Cíana.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible Tuesday night in Carson City and portions of western Nevada and eastern California, according to the National Weather Service.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada is hosting a free, 6-week parenting workshop beginning Wednesday, Aug. 30 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Carson City clubhouse located at 1870 Russell Way. Free dinner is provided for participating families.

The first week of school is off to a smashing start at Western Nevada College in Carson City. Among the activities the Associated Students of Western Nevada arranged for students was knockerball. The students played the soccer game in bubbled suits on Tuesday afternoon at John L. Harvey Field. Knockerball Las Vegas provided the equipment.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Monday afternoon to the parking lot of Buffalo Wild Wings in the 3800 block of South Carson Street for an RV on fire. It was extinguished by the time firefighters arrived.

It’s the Wildcats turn to head back to campus. The fall semester at Western Nevada College kicks off today. The Reading Partners Program is welcoming volunteers that would like to lend a hand to kids learning to read. Attend their short seminar today and you’ll be on your way helping instill a love of reading to the next generation. Get on the dance floor at Carson Lanes. You’ll find a beginner’s swing dance class, one for intermediate dancers, and a few hours of open dancing to show off your new moves.

MONDAY:

The threat of thunderstorms expected to arrive in Carson City and Western Nevada Tuesday afternoon and last through Wednesday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Fire Weather Watch for the region.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Tony Manfredi, a Nevada native and veteran executive in public broadcasting, has been named executive director of the Nevada Arts Council.

To meet the growing crunch for qualified construction craft laborers, Western Nevada College, in partnership with Nevada Builders Alliance, JOIN, Inc. and JobConnect, is again offering an accelerated, nationally recognized construction certification class at its Carson City campus. The course runs Monday through Friday, Aug. 28 through Oct. 26.

Offers thirty hours of new driver education in a classroom setting. Meets requirements to obtain a Nevada driver's license. Uses lectures, interactive CD's, videos and on occasion guest speakers: Auto Insurance, Accident Victims, DMV Examiner, Department of Public Safety, Law Enforcement, and our WNC Auto Instructor to give vehicle & engine component identification.

UPDATE: Lightning strikes on Tuesday afternoon may have contributed to several fires burning in the region, including the I-80 fire near Vista Boulevard in Sparks, the Micro Fire in central Lyon County southeast of Stagecoach, the Lyons Fire, which is in Douglas County but seen as far away as Dayton and Yerington. That fire as of early Wednesday morning was reported to be around 500 acres. It is located northeast of Sunrise Pass in the Pine Nut Mountains.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop Tuesday and Wednesday across the Sierra and portions of western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service.

The Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College brought around 200 solar eclipse viewers to the Carson City campus Monday.

In Carson City, there are eclipse programs at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College and at the Carson City Library. (Solar eclipse glasses at the library have been pre-distributed and none are available at this time.) However, those who wish to participate in the program are welcome to attend.

What a day we have in store. Sure, it’s off to school for the kids in Carson City, but this will be a day to remember for another reason, the solar eclipse. A huge swath of our country will see a total solar eclipse, but here in Carson City, only 81 percent of totality will be achieved. That means there is NO time that you can look at the sun without risking injury. I repeat: do NOT look directly at the sun. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival bids farewell to another year with a free concert in McFadden Plaza featuring the talented members of the Mile High Jazz Band.

Solar viewing glasses will be turned to the sky for Monday’s solar eclipse. While Carson City and western Nevada are not in the totality path, the eclipse will still be quite visible, with 75 to 90 percent of totality, or the percent of the sun obscured, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A total of 89 juniors and seniors at Carson High School have enrolled for their first or second year in the Jump Start program at Western Nevada College.

The Carl Howell Memorial Music Festival at Battle Born Harley boasts a full day of live music, vendors, activities and family fun. Bowers Mansion plays host to the annual Bluegrass Festival – bring a picnic and enjoy. A low pressure system off the coast of southern California will bring air instability and moisture to western Nevada and the Eastern Sierra through the weekend and into next week creating the potential for thunderstorm activity, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture has confirmed three horses tested positive for West Nile Virus in western Nevada in the last two weeks. All three horses were not vaccinated. Two of the horses were located in Lyon County, one in Dayton and one in Yerington, and the other in Washoe County.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval will honor a distinguished area veteran and a veteran's support group in a ceremony this coming Monday, August 21. The public is invited to attend as United Veterans Legislative Council Chairman Kevin Burns and the Douglas County non-profit, Welcome All Veterans Everywhere will be recognized and honored.

Buffalo Bill’s Wild West returns to Dangberg Historic Park on Saturday, August 26 at 11:00 am as the park’s final major event of the 2017 Dangberg Summer Festival.

The show features Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Annie Oakley, the Pony Express, The Mayfield Gang and the 1st Nevada Cavalry. The Douglas High School Marching Band and western singer-songwriter Krista Jenkins return for a second year to draw the audience back in time to the frontier of the American West.

Western Nevada College is proud to announce that 32 students have qualified for the 2017 Summer Dean’s List.
To earn this distinction during the summer term, students attained a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and completed six units of classes or more. Students achieving the academic honor are:

Western Nevada College President Chester (Chet) Burton has announced that Friday, Aug. 18 will be his last day at WNC. Burton has accepted the position of Chief Financial Officer for the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Western Nevada College has joined more than 1,700 colleges and universities across the country in kicking the habit. When students arrive for the fall semester on Monday, Aug. 28, WNC’s three campuses will be tobacco-free. WNC actually became tobacco free in advance of the semester, banning tobacco products as of Monday.
