With the arrival of a new year there is an opportunity to start a new career in home inspection at Western Nevada College. Certified Home Inspection courses will be offered on the Carson City campus starting on Monday, Jan. 8, helping prepare an individual for what is necessary to excel in the business.

Ease into the new year with something fun. Trivia junkies have two options for showing off their smarts: DJ Trivia at the Fox Brewpub and the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras are both free to play and open to all ages. Muscle Powered offers two trail hikes on Tuesday. Today take an easy walk along the Mexican Ditch area in the morning, or opt for something more strenuous along the Linear Ditch this evening. Songwriter Canyon White leads a jam at Living the Good Life: strum along or just sit back and enjoy the music.

Trevor and Tessa Rotoli have been operating Just Brew It, Carson City’s local brewing supply store, since 2010.

The husband and wife team have expanded the business over the years with more space, product, and added sales of craft beer and a four-tap bar.

It’s finally here, the last weekend of 2017. It’s fairly quiet around town, until Sunday night, that is. Today, Muscle Powered is leading a five-mile half-day hike along Prison Hill. Take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather, and join them. The Carson Nugget is hosting three nights of comedy this weekend: catch Myles Weber on the stage tonight. Head’s up. Galaxy Theater usually plays a movie from the past on Sundays and Wednesdays. This week, we get treated to the Christmas Classic, Die Hard. You won’t want to miss that.

The Early Childhood Expo is an annual event that provides Carson City with information on early childhood resources, including programs, child care, health care, and more.

The long holiday weekend has ended, but the school district’s winter break has just begun. The Carson City Library invites everyone to participate in their Winter Read-a-thon; cuddle up with a book during these cold winter days. Before you break into the cookies, you might want to consider a morning bike ride with Muscle Powered; it won’t do anything for the calories, but it may assuage some guilt. If you’re over 21, then test your luck at the Senior Citizen’s Center. BINGO today raises money for the Meals on Wheels program that feeds home-bound seniors. You’ve got one last chance to see Santa Claus. Find him at the Carson Mall until 5 p.m. and then he’s off for his midnight ride.

High clouds with periods of sunshine and gusty winds are expected this weekend around the Carson City and Lake Tahoe regions, putting a familiar capper on a likely Christmas without snow in western Nevada.

If you’re anything like me, there are still plenty of last-minute preparations for the holiday. Luckily the shops and businesses around Carson City are there with open arms. Find something one of a kind at the Carson Mall Craft Fair, drop it off at the Rainbow Girls Assembly #7 gift wrapping booth, and grab lunch while you wait. Breakfast with Santa at the Fox Brewpub serves as a toy drive for area kids and as no-fuss way to get start the day with a full belly. Read on for a weekend full of holiday happenings.

SATURDAY:

The Carson City Library welcomes the community as it launches the inaugural nationwide Winter Reading Challenge beginning today, Friday, Dec. 22, through Jan. 5, 2018.

The Read-A-Thon kick-off event will be held Friday from 4-6 p.m. at the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 850 E William St, Carson City. The presentation will include songs, stories, puppets, and activities. Also, you will be able to register for the Winter Read-A-Thon.

There are some fairly excited kids throughout the valley. This last Friday before Christmas marks the beginning of winter break. The Carson City Library invites everyone in the community to participate in the annual Winter Read-a-thon with a goal of 90,000 minutes read (or listened to) over the next two weeks. Sign up on-line or at their kick-off event this afternoon. Comedian John Mencarelli headlines Carson Comedy inside the Carson Nugget, and you’ll find the Rebekah Chase Band on stage in their Loft. In anticipation of the Carson City Off Road 2018 mountain bike event in June, the promoting agency Epic Rides will hold a community signup and discount night Jan. 3 at The Fox Brewpub.

A 66-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of felony drug trafficking and sales after a traffic stop for speeding led to the recovery of 15.7 grams of methamphetamine, a Carson City Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team deputy said.

A High Wind Warning is underway for the region as Carson City braces for a fairly quick moving winter storm that is expected to bring 50 to 60 mph wind gusts followed by accumulating snow along the valley floors and 8 to 10 inches above 7,000 feet.

Winter is settling in, even if our mountains are lacking their snowy blanket. It’s chilly out there, but the members of Muscle Powered head out for a walk and a hike every Tuesday unless the rain or snow is falling. Contractors are hard at work in the Carson City Library, tearing out carpet to replace the flooring and paint the walls. While the library will not reopen until late January, limited services will be available during the closure.

It’s beginning to look, and sound, a lot like Christmas. Let the Tintabulations Handbell Ensemble entertain you with the in the warmth and magic of the holiday season during their free Winter Wandering concerts. ‘Elf’ is a modern holiday classic, and you’ll find it on the big screen today and Wednesday at the Galaxy Theater. Track down Santa at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada; a family membership to the museum makes a great gift for anyone with little ones. Keep reading for even more Sunday fun day activities.

Santa comes in all shapes, sizes, and apparently, vehicles. Hop aboard the Santa Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum. It’s an out-of-this-world Alien Santa at the annual Zen Christmas at A to Zen. A cookie-loving Santa can be found at Adele’s during their annual toy drive for the Ron Wood Resource Center. If your ‘kids’ are the four-legged kind, then head over to PetSmart or Paws to Pur-fection Dog Grooming for your holiday photos. In addition to the Santa-mania, you’ll find a downtown Carson Beer Crawl, two plays at the Brewery Arts Center, and plenty of music.

The Carson City area is awash in entertainment, shopping, and family-friendly options this weekend. Santa Claus is popping up all over, including at Benson Feed for the annual CASI Pet Photos with St. Nick and aboard the train at our Railroad Museum’s Santa Train. The musical ‘Honk, Jr’ for the young ones and Love/Sick for the older crowd are on the stage at the Brewery Arts Center. Spend the day at the Silver Saddle Ranch: their annual Holiday Open House is the perfect time to explore their trails and learn more about the working ranch’s preservation.

The air may be brisk, but the view from C-Hill is rewarding. Meet up with Muscle Powered in the Curry Street parking lot behind the Railroad Museum for their afternoon conditioning hike. Get the little ones to the Carson Library for story time today; the Library will be undergoing some much needed sprucing up and will be closed for up to two months starting Dec. 10. Community Roots in Dayton hosts an open house to show off their collection of gifts, flowers, and more.

Nevada was hit hardest among the 50 states by the Great Recession of 2007-09 and was the slowest to recover. It was the last state to see its total employment levels return to pre-recession figures – even though our population growth had already resumed.

Since nearly everyone agrees that high employment is good, you’d think a public policy change that increases employment is something politicians would embrace. From experience, we’re skeptical, but we offer here evidence for just such a change: reforming state occupation licensing laws.

The rumors of Santa Claus coming to town are true. The jolly old man is making several appearances today, and is feeling photogenic. Take a ride with him at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, join him on the ‘Elf Crawl’ from the Capitol to the Carson Mall, or tell him your wish list at Debug Computers. Adults have a hard choice to make: the monthly downtown wine walk and the Holiday with a Hero Pub Crawl both take place today, and I’m not sure I’d recommend attempting both.
