Registration is now open for the Nevada Day Classic, an 8K run and 2 mile run/walk that brings together hundreds of runners and walkers just prior to the Nevada Day Parade in historic Carson City.

What a day we have in store. Sure, it’s off to school for the kids in Carson City, but this will be a day to remember for another reason, the solar eclipse. A huge swath of our country will see a total solar eclipse, but here in Carson City, only 81 percent of totality will be achieved. That means there is NO time that you can look at the sun without risking injury. I repeat: do NOT look directly at the sun. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival bids farewell to another year with a free concert in McFadden Plaza featuring the talented members of the Mile High Jazz Band.

Beginning & Intermediate Adult Pottery
Students will receive an introduction to clay from hand-building to throwing on the potter’s wheel. Additionally, instruction will include design and glazing. Please bring towel &/or apron & wear closed toe shoes. A supply fee of $15 will be collected by instructor at the first class.

Paint outdoors on the first Saturday of each month from 10:00am - 1:00pm. Each fun and exciting class gives encouragement and support as you create art in the ever changing outdoor environment. Step by step instruction, often including one on one help, is provided from locations that vary each month.You will learn and practice the concepts that translate a three dimensional scene to a two dimensional surface, including choosing a composition, understanding value, shapes, edges, and texture, as you create your compositions.
All levels of artists are welcome.

Want to learn how to make beautiful GemTangles with just your basic Zentangle kit and some colored pencils? It's easy, and as always...no mistakes! You'll learn a couple of techniques to add sparkling, glassy gems to your zentangles. This is both fun, relaxing and addictive! Oh, and you'll learn a few new tangles, too! Class size is limited.
Prerequisites: "Zentangle 101," "Advanced Zentangle," Introduction to Renaissance Tiles OR Grow Your Own Tangle Garden.

Okay... you're addicted right? You need to learn some more tangles! And, take your Zentangles in another direction. In this workshop we will do both!!We will now incorporate traditional tangles with the elements of design and color and create a fabulous greeting card. Not only will you have an opportunity to add some color to your tangles, but you will go home with a template for making a card that frames your Zentangle tiles in a very fun and attractive way! AND, you will learn 6 new tangles!!! Bring your mini Zentangle kit. All other material will be provided.

Expanding on the basic concepts learned in the “Zentangle 101 class, you will learn 6 more tangles. In addition, specific techniques for embellishing your tangles and taking them to the next level. Bring your mini starter kit to class. Prerequisite: Zentangle 101

Be sure to bring your own preferred drawing materials, snacks, and water and a travel chair

This fun and exciting class is designed for beginning as well as more experienced students. You will learn techniques in creating non-functional ceramics as you learn to use clay to build artistic sculptures. You will be exposed to concepts such as composition, weight, color, form, and texture while creating contemporary pieces and beautiful three dimensional ceramic art.
Students will need to bring a towel. The supply fee covers clay, glazes, firing, and everything else you will need to complete multiple projects.

Calligraphy for Beginners-Designed for Youth and Adults. Learn the basics of beautiful handwriting for greeting cards, bookmarks and small signs. Students will learn the basics of calligraphy and other types of lettering and how to design, measure spacing, and decorate greeting cards and small signs. Improvisational Acting (Ages 9-14) Have fun with Improv! We will use games, team-building exercises and basic improv structures. No experience necessary. Students will gain confidence on stage, employ public speaking skills, think quickly on their feet and create fun scenes out of thin air. The concerts in the Capital Amphitheater have always been a local favorite: blanket and a picnic are all you need to make the most of this Sunday afternoon. Flashback to yesteryear at the Virginia City ‘Way it Was Rodeo.’ The Trippin King Snakes take the stage at the Genoa Bar Porch Party. Food and drink will be available, and it’s a great way to wind down the weekend.

SUNDAY: Jazz and Beyond Music Festival

Make this weekend something special. School starts up on Monday and it will be Halloween before we blink an eye. The Carl Howell Memorial Music Festival at Battle Born Harley boasts a full day of live music, vendors, activities and family fun. Bowers Mansion plays host to the annual Bluegrass Festival – bring a picnic and enjoy. Downtown Carson City will see the first of three monthly Beer Crawls; if you get there early, head over to Remedy’s to witness their yearly Bloody Mary Competition. There is something for everyone this weekend, so keep reading and find your fun.

UPDATE SUNDAY, AUG. 20: For Monday's eclipse program, the Carson City Library is taking walk ins, however they will not be guaranteed eclipse safety glasses. The library will have other activities available and a telescope with a solar filter.

Join the Carson City Library in viewing the solar eclipse this Monday, August 21 from 9 to 11 a.m. The Library will have hands-on activities, a telescope with safety filter, and other informational activities to help commemorate this amazing event.

This summer is flying by and the fun is heating up.

The Silver Saddle Ranch is always beautiful, but an afternoon filled with live bluegrass and western music, food, and family fun, makes today’s ‘A Day at the Ranch’ your best bet. Just about everywhere you go, you’ll be treated to something to soothe the soul or get the toes tapping. SATURDAY: Jazz and Beyond Music Festival

Carson City Parks and Recreation Youth Programs has partnered with the Carson City Salvation Army to collect school supplies and backpacks for children in our community.

It will be a weekend of classics at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, Aug. 19-20 with a mix of music, railroad and automotive history.

Once upon a time the talented kids of Youth Theater Carson City took to the Community Center stage. You have one last chance to catch their fairytale, ‘Into the Woods, Jr.’ before it heads off to Neverland. The Brewery Arts Center plays host to a plethora of Jazz and Beyond today. Don't miss the final day of hot rods and chrome at the Silver Dollar Car Classic in Mills Park. Exercise your artistic talent and play with some mud at Ogres-Holm Pottery where they will be creating bowls for the upcoming Empty Bowls event.

Summer weekends make me wish I had a clone. With all the hustle and bustle in town, there is just no way to do and see it all. Start the day at the Silver Dollar Car Classic and you can get your fill of shiny chrome and breakfast, too; the Kiwanis will be serving up pancakes until 10:30 a.m. The Downtown Carson City Wine Walk has been infiltrated by the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival. Several of the stops will be hosting musicians, in addition to vino.

Come join us in viewing the solar eclipse! We will have hands-on activities, free solar eclipse glasses, and a photo booth to help you commemorate this amazing event.

With all the color, chrome and roar of engines, the summertime perennial favorite Silver Dollar Car Classic returns to Carson City with events running Thursday through Sunday.
