Snowshoe treks on tap throughout Tahoe
There's plenty going on out there for snowshoe fans around Lake Tahoe. I've enjoyed the sport but haven't tried the big foot stuff of late. Here's what's snowshoeing these days:
— Go with Tony Berendsen at Northstar-at-Tahoe at 5 p.m. Dec. 30 at Northstar. Tony is a poet and astronomer and offers Star Gazing Snowshoe tours. Price is $50 for adults, $30 for those12 and under with 10 the minimum age. Snowshoe rentals are $5. Call Norhstar at (530) 562-3270 or go online to www.northstarattahoe.com. Tell them Sam sent you.
— Winter Trails Day is Jan. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lots of action at the west end of Tahoe Meadows on the south side of Mt. Rose Highway. Tahoe Rim Trail people will be guiding free tours all day with plenty of tips and fun. The Red Cross will offer safety talks at noon. A Snowman building contest will be held for the kids along with snowshelter demonstrations.
Explore Tahoe will join with Tahoe Rim Trail Association for a tour from 9 to noon at the Kingsbury North trailhead near Heavenly Mountain Resort. Post-hike hot beverages and snacks will b served after the trek. Details (530) 542-4637.
— The Tahoe Rim Trail Assn. will be offeering free snowshoe hikes good for all levels of skill; short hikes best for kids. Dates:
Jan. 8, guided hike to Castle Rock.
Jan. 15, Snowhoe season officially begins. Gentle 3-mile trip to Page Meadows, outside Tahoe City.
Jan. 19, full moon hike for TRTA members, through the Tahoe Meadows. You can join TRTA at this hike or call (775) 298-0012.
Jan. 22, Easy 4 miles to Castle Rock.
Jan. 29, Martis Peak, a moderate eight-mile outing to the Peak, above Kings Beach on the North Shore.
Register in advance for the TRTA hikes at (775) 298-0012.
Don't know that I'll be joining you on these fun outings as I still have to get the back in shape for skiing, but for the Jan. 22, I'll try. Meanwhile, gotta check out that spiffy new Heavenly lodge near the top of the Gondola lift.
