Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town this Friday at Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights
Chestnuts will be roasting at the Carson City Elks booth on Telegraph Street this Friday as thousands assemble to hear the Carson City School District Fifth Graders sing traditional carols on the steps of the capitol as part of the Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights.
Since 1988, Carson City has sponsored the annual tree lighting ceremony taking place on the capitol lawn followed by the tree lighting at the Presbyterian Church. Now a beloved family tradition, the Silver & Snowflakes Festival of Lights heralds in this holiday season on December 4th incorporating the theme “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town.”
New this year is the addition of food and craft vendors on Telegraph Street to be closed between 4-9 p.m. The Westside Pour House will be serving a traditional warm holiday drink, Gluhwein, found in the Germanic countries during the holiday season. Special collector cups have been designed by Pinyon Pottery for purchase to celebrate the occasion and are perfect to keep the Gluhwein warm. There will be free coffee and hot chocolate courtesy of the Carson City Elks and Life Point Church. Hillbilly Chili and Tahoe Tenderloins food truck will be preparing hot meals for purchase. There will be kids craft tables, ornaments for sale and opportunities for photos with Santa after the tree lighting.
Also new this year will be entertainment provided by various youth groups on the Telegraph Street Stage. Come hear the Carson High Chamber Choir, the Carson Middle School Band, the YTCC Showstoppers. The Wild Horse Children’s Theater will be singing selections from “Babes in Toyland” at 4 pm.
Added last year as part of the Festival – and included again this year –is the free ice-skating for those under 12 at Arlington Square Ice Rink.
If you plan to dine before or after the event, be sure to make your reservation, for the restaurants will be busy. Carson Street will remain open, but drive cautiously since there will be many enjoying the downtown core.
The Silver & Snowflakes Festival of Lights is a magical event for all ages.
