Silver and Snowflake art contest winners announced
Seventy-five budding artists from kindergarten through grade 12 entered their art work into an annual contest recently as part of Carson City's annual Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights.
Each year, the teen board of the Carson City Library chooses a theme to coincide with the Christmas holidays. This year’s theme was “A Novel Christmas,” asking children to draw what Christmas would look like in their favorite novels.
There are three categories with three winners in each category, all receiving prize monies and a certificate of accomplishment presented by Carson City Chamber of Commerce and the Carson City Redevelopment Authority.
Winners are chosen by the library teen board who take the task seriously.
In the K-3 category:
First Place: Haylee Soulier, Grade 3
Second Place: Melenny Avalos Diaz, Grade 3
Third Place: Jessica Barry, Grade 2
In the Grades 4-6 category:
First Place: Nevaeh Gibbs, Grade 5
Second Place: Janet Landa Ramirez, Grade 5
Third Place: Christina Meza, Grade 4
In the 7-12 grade category:

Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights will be held Friday night, Dec. 5 beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the Capitol steps. Christmas Carols will be sung by the CCSD Fifth Graders and the state tree and city will be lit by outgoing Nevada Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki.
Santa will be in attendance and then lead the procession to the official lighting of the city Christmas tree by Mayor Robert Crowell where the Carson High Chamber Choir will sing. The Carson Middle School Band will perform at Telegraph Square and the Carson City Youth Theater Showstoppers will perform at the Arlington Square Ice Rink. It will be an evening of Christmas music to herald in the season.
Children under 12 are invited to skate free at Arlington Square that evening beginning at 6 pm. The Elks Club and Downtown Business Association will be serving free hot chocolate and cookies. The Carson Nugget is providing a winter wonderland experience in their ballroom for all ages following the ceremony.
The Empty Bowls project is serving hot soup beginning at 4:30 pm made by local restaurants at Telegraph Square for a donation of $12 to fund FISH.
All are invited to enjoy a wonderful hometown experience in downtown Carson City. Carson Street will be closed between 4-7 pm to assure the safety of the children and guests. It is suggested Stewart Street be used as the alternate route.
