Community and Senior Center in Gardnerville to celebrate grand opening
After months of anticipation, the Douglas County Community and Senior Center will host its grand opening with an open house on Dec. 6, 2014 at 1 p.m. The center is at 1329 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville. The celebration will allow the public to finally step inside the 83,000-square-foot building that features a wide variety of new state-of-the-art amenities.
“I can’t over emphasize how important this new facility is to our community,” said Scott Morgan, Douglas County Community Services director. “People are going to be very impressed and the Board of County commissioners should be congratulated for the leadership they showed in making this a priority.”
This is the general public’s first opportunity to step inside the new facility and during the open house the following will be offered:
• Commemorative gift for the first 1,800 guests
• Free hot dog, chips & soda (while supplies last)
• Tours of the Center from 1:30 - 5:00pm
• Opportunity to purchase your annual pass
• A chance to learn about activities in the building
Since the Center broke ground on October 19, 2012, the Douglas County Community Services Foundation has collected over $1.4 million to help furnish the building.
“We are still looking for donations,” said Bob Cook, Douglas County Community Services Foundation President. “The open house will give us the opportunity to show people what we still need.”
The new center includes:
Dining facility and kitchen
The dining room can seat approximately 300 people at tables with beautiful mountain views. The kitchen is a larger commercial style with improved meals –on-wheels capability for Seniors.
Senior facility
A portion of the Center is dedicated to senior activities: a larger craft and ceramics area, gift shop, activity rooms for games (such as bridge, bingo, and bunko) and a common area for socializing. There will also be a senior day care facility and a nurse’s station on site.
Community Center
The remainder of the building includes 2 basketball/4 volleyball courts, exercise equipment, an indoor walking and running track, locker rooms and restrooms. The facility will be large enough for the whole community to enjoy. The Center will also have the capacity to host a variety of major tournaments.
The Foundation continues to collect funds to help fulfill the Center’s needs. If you would like to make a donation, you can do so through PayPal here.
The Douglas County Community Services Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) formed to financially support and enhance Douglas County’s Recreation and Senior Centers, through the funding of capital projects and equipment.
The Community and Senior Center is one of Douglas County’s 8 priority projects. The Economic Vitality Program, established in 2010, strives to “Create a Community to Match the Scenery.”
