Douglas County Businesses Receive 2021 Community Spirit Spotlight Awards

For the eighth consecutive year, several Douglas County businesses were recognized with a Spotlight Award. This year’s awards were announced at the hybrid Critical Issues Conference held on September 30, 2021.

In light of the Pandemic, Douglas County thought it best to pause traditional awards in 2020 which usually recognize businesses in seven industry categories and instead honor businesses that had done something outstanding during COVID-19. This year the new award set-up continued.

The Spotlight Award required winners to remain viable during the pandemic closures, adapt to changing conditions and above all give back to the community and/or public sector. This year there is only one category for our Business Spotlight Awards – the Community Spirit Award.

The following businesses received 2021 Douglas County Community Spirit Business Spotlight Awards:

• Lucky Beaver Bar & Burger

“For businesses, this past year can certainly be described as ever-changing and uncertain, but even during these pandemic times, it remained important to Spotlight our local businesses that continue to strengthen the community, each in their own unique way,” said Economic Vitality Manager, Lisa Granahan. “The fact that so many people stepped-up to provide for the community, as exemplified by these four, reflects the values our local businesses hold. The Spotlight Awards are a way for the County to shed light on those select businesses who fostered togetherness, resourcefulness, and formed a path forward by giving back. We want to take this time to acknowledge how our winners positively impact Douglas County, and say thank you for all they do.”

Each winner received an engraved lantern with a glowing flameless candle symbolic of keeping the Economic Vitality torch lit in creating a “Community to Match the Scenery.”

The selection process for this year’s award remained the same as previous years. Recommendations were made based on input from business community organizations such as the local Chambers of Commerce, Main Street Gardnerville, the Nevada Small Business Development Center, and the Business Council of Douglas County.

Mindy Lessard was married to Mr. Tomko in 2013 and they filed a joint tax return. However, two items of income were not reported on the return. There was $14,936 of cancellation of debt income that was his and $20,502 of distributions to him from his retirement plan. They were divorced in 2014. Free Music, Free Concert, Youth, Choirs, Community Band

A first-year robotics team made up of youth from Carson City and Reno has been crowned state champions following its victory at FIRST Robotics Tech Challenge Nevada State Championships held in Reno.

A 34 year-old Reno woman was arrested Saturday morning at 8:19 a.m. in the area of Gold Dust Way and East William Street on misdemeanor driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol and for driving with a suspended license, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.

UPDATE: 1:48PM: The Douglas County Sheriff's Office confirms at least one person has died in a small plane crash in the area of Hobo Hot Springs west of U.S. Highway 395 and south of Plymouth Drive in northern Douglas County.
The wreckage of a Piper PA-34 Seneca aircraft was located by search crews with the East Fork Fire Protection District and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office at about 12:20 p.m. Monday.
The initial report of a downed aircraft came in at around 11:30 a.m. Monday morning, and emergency crews were dispatched to the scene.

UPDATE: 8:00PM: NV Energy reports 78 customers in downtown Carson City remain without power at this hour. Electricity is expected to be restored by 10:30 p.m. Sunday night, the utilities company said.

A power outage has been reported in the area of Roop and Robinson Streets, where the lights of the traffic signal at that intersection are reported to be out in all directions, according to Carson City Emergency Dispatch.

UPDATE: 6:55AM: The apartment fire at the Broadleaf Apartments has been extinguished, Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Tom Raw said.
The fire started within a heating unit inside a laundry room at the complex, Raw said. The flames were extinguished about 6 a.m., within minutes of fire crews arriving on scene.
No injuries were reported.

Multiple engines with the Carson City Fire Department were dispatched early Sunday morning to the Broadleaf Manor Apartments, 777 Silver Oak Drive in North Carson City, on report of a structure fire.

Carson High School senior Cesia Enriquez is working to complete her Senior Project graduation requirement with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office 2018 CHS Seniors Academy, specifically designed for those seniors interested in making law enforcement their future career.

Carson’s Got Talent, an evening extravaganza of regional talent, is holding a second audition for the April 14 show at Forever Dance, 1851 S. Roop Street in Carson City on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Check in is at 5 p.m. Auditions begin at 6 p.m. All ages and genres are invited to audition.

Enjoy Saturday's sunny skies and mild weather as big changes are coming with a strong cold front set to move through the Carson City area Sunday, dropping temperatures and bringing some light snow showers, according to the National Weather Service.

Bepsy Strasburg was out running errands Friday afternoon when she stopped by the Carson City Library. While there, she took a trip around the world and through time and space — visiting a family in India, walking with dinosaurs and tripping through the stars — with the help of virtual reality.
