Winter weather returns to Carson City, with gusty winds and single digit lows
Enjoy Saturday's sunny skies and mild weather as big changes are coming with a strong cold front set to move through the Carson City area Sunday, dropping temperatures and bringing some light snow showers, according to the National Weather Service.
The system will produce strong and gusty winds on Sunday with gusts up to 50 mph possible and up to 65 mph in wind prone locations. A Wind Advisory is in effect Sunday from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.
Snow showers are expected with the front on Sunday afternoon and evening. Light valley accumulations are possible and drivers should be prepared for slick roads and travel slow downs across both western Nevada and the Sierra. For the capital city and surrounding valley areas, there's a 60 percent chance of snow showers Sunday night and a 40 percent chance Monday, according to the weather service.
While it has been awhile since the Sierra has seen any significant snow accumulation, looming larger may actually be the cold temperatures expected for the week.
Overnight low temperatures will plummet from relatively mild lows tonight to downright frigid by Monday night with the coldest temperatures of this "winter" anticipated, according to the weather service.
By Tuesday morning, lows are expected to drop into the teens and single digits for most areas with colder Sierra valleys dropping below zero. Wind will make temperatures Tuesday morning feel even colder with some areas well below zero in the Sierra with wind chill factored in.
Temperatures will remain below normal Tuesday and Wednesday with only slight warming on Wednesday. Overnight and early morning temperatures will be in the teens and single digits across most areas both Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, with a few colder valleys in the Sierra seeing temperatures dip down below zero. Cold temperatures will be here to stay through the week and possibly into next weekend.
For Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, Sunday high temperatures will be in the upper 40s, with a low around 19. Less than a half inch of snow is possible.
By Monday, the daytime high is only expected to reach the freezing mark, with lows in the upper single digits. Tuesday's forecast high is 33 with an overnight low of 12. Wednesday highs will be slightly warmer, with a forecast high near 40, with lows near 20.
