Carson City veterinary raises cash to equip sheriff’s canine team with bullet-proof vests
Carson City sheriff’s deputies routinely wear life protective clothing in the line of duty. Now, five four-paw members of Carson City’s Sheriff’s canine team have added safety too, thanks to a local veterinary hospital.
The dogs were outfitted recently with bullet and knife-protected, strike-rated vests as part of a fundraising effort by Sierra Veterinary Hospital on Saliman Road in Carson City.
Launched in December 2014, the veterinary hospital held raffles and accepted cash on behalf of customers to raise nearly $5,000 needed to outfit each of Carson City’s canine members with the vests.
“We did this because we love our furry friends and their 2-legged partners, so we rallied the community to come up with the money and they delivered,” said Sierra Veterinary Managing Director Sean Campbell.
Deputy Brett Bindley said Sierra Veterinary contacted him last year with its fundraising intentions. Sierra Veterinary is where officers routinely go to treat their dogs for ailments and shots.
The dogs undergo training but are still put into positions, much like their handlers, that can be dangerous. The vests are added protection, he said. Once the fundraising ended, each of the dogs were fitted.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. made the vests and deputies have been training the dogs with the vests on, said Bindley, who has Ivo, a 3-year-old Czech Shepherd. The vests will be embroidered soon with “Protected by Sierra Veterinary Hospital.”
The canine teams are assigned to normal patrol duties and supplement the departments ability to find illegal drugs and suspects. The dogs train on a regular basis in their respective areas and are certified yearly. They routinely visit the local schools giving presentations and educating children on the dangers of using illegal drugs.
The dogs conduct searches of vehicles, buildings, schools, and any other location illegal drugs can be found. The canine teams assist other local agencies with requests for searching for illegal drugs and have been involved in Highway Interdiction of drugs traveling through our community.
“It gives me more peace of mind knowing now my dog is just as equipped for safety as I am,” said Deputy Sean Palamar whose canine, Sepsi, is among the five-member canine team.
