Carson City celebrates safety, community at 2017 National Night Out
Hundreds of families and thousands of children flooded the green belt at Mills Park Tuesday night to celebrate Carson City’s commitment to community and public safety at the 15th annual National Night Out.
The three hour event in the heart of Carson City was filled with lively entertainment, music, food, activities and games that required aim, accuracy and sometimes brute strength for kids and adults who stepped up for the many challenges.
Throughout the years, National Night Out Carson City has grown into a community partnership where families, law enforcement, nonprofits and public agencies aim to strengthen communication when it comes to crime prevention, disaster awareness and fighting substance abuse by encouraging citizen participation, developing bonds of trust and promoting pro-active prevention.
"This event means everything to us as a community,” said National Night Out organizer and DARE Officer Lisa Davis. “We see many problems that occur all around the country, but the reality is you build relationships and trust before any of these problems like drugs, violence, and alcohol even happen. So that when disaster hits, we can all come together and work toward solving it.”
Along with vibing music from DJ Dan Kimm, much of the park was transformed into demonstration central showing what goes into keeping citizens safe and healthy.
Kids were able to explore the cockpit of a Cessna 182 airplane and inside of the Careflight air ambulance. Non-profit organizations and public safety agencies set-up an array of vibrant booths, where families were encouraged to take part in an assortment of games and activities.
To beat the heat of the hot summer night, delicious hot dogs and ice-cold refreshments were served free of charge to anyone hungry or thirsty. The hot dogs, nearly 3,000 of them and 3,500 beverages were donated by ORH LLC, and Grocery Outlet.
Katrina Penman, a mother of two children, described the importance of National Night Out to the Carson City community.
“I believe for my kids it shows them that authority is safe,” Penman said. “Not being fearful of police and natural disasters are important to me and my family. Drug and alcohol awareness is really helpful as well, especially at such young ages.”
To cap-off the festivities, Sheriff Ken Furlong expressed his gratitude to attendees, volunteers and groups for hosting such a successful event and offered a warm thanks to all of the families and friends who gathered to share the evening at Mills Park.
He noted the Carson City Sheriff's Office and Fire Department have great working partners with state and federal agencies that focus their combined efforts to keep the Carson City community safe and healthy.
"We couldn't be successful without them," said Sheriff Furlong. "A special appreciation goes out to all of the volunteers, businesses, non-profits, and organizations that make this event such a success every year. And finally, congratulations to Deputy Lisa Davis, project lead coordinator, for another perfect presentation."
