Dog show kicks off Carson City Fair, more events to follow
After five years in the 4 Paws 4-H Dog Club, Morgan Craghill, 14, had her first opportunity to compete in an actual dog show this week as part of the Carson City Fair at Fuji Park.
“It was really fun and I was really happy to be able to meet a some of the kids who do what I’m doing but in different cities,” she said. “The experience was wonderful. It gave me a great time to bond with my fellow peers and my dog.”
Craghill earned a first place in showmanship and third in rally with her 3-year-old German shepherd mix Borris.
“I’m very proud of Borris,” she said. “He’s come a long way since he was a puppy. I’m excited for more experiences in our future.”
Vivi Mellow, 9, just completed her first year in 4-H and showed her 6-year-old German shorthair pointer and Labrador mix, Annie, in the show.
“I love my dog, but she didn’t behave that well,” Mellow said. “She would always just plop herself on the couch and not go in her own bed. It helped because now we have rules.”
The two-day dog show concluded Tuesday. The Carson City Fair Grand Opening Ceremony will be 3 p.m. Wednesday followed by the soft opening of the carnival at 6 that evening. The youth livestock show and static exhibits will continue throughout the rest of the week.
The Carson City Fair Board, a partnership of nonprofits joining together, is working to bring a traditional fair back to the capital city. It will run through Sunday at Fuji Park.
“It’s a nice way for people to reconnect with a county fair,” said Lindsay Chichester, chairwoman of the fair board. “It’s a good way to tap into our agricultural roots and the importance of youth participation. It’s a good, family event.”
Antique tractors will be on display Friday and Saturday with a parade at 11 a.m. Friday and tractor pulls at noon. The tractor parade will be 10 a.m. Saturday and the pulls at 11 a.m.
All of the tractor events are free.
The fifth annual Bulls, Broncs and Barrels will return to Carson City as entertainment on July 28 and 29. Tickets for the show are available at Benson’s Feed, 2750 Highway 50 East; J T Basque Bar & Dining Room, 1426 Highway 395, Gardnerville; or the Carson City Culture & Tourism Authority, 716 N. Carson St. or visitcarsoncity.com.
Free public parking will be available at the Walmart on Topsy Lane. JAC buses will run from that parking lot to the Fuji Park as follows: 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Thursday; 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday; and 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday.
