National Night Out: A Celebration of Community Policing and Safety Efforts
The 17th annual National Night Out, hosted by the National Association of Town Watch and the Carson City Sheriff's Office, will be held Tuesday, August 6, 2019 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mills Park, Carson City, Nevada.
National Night Out serves many purposes which are to heighten public awareness of crime, substance abuse and violence prevention; generate support for anticrime programs; and to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relationships. In Carson City, National Night Out represents a culmination of all efforts taken throughout the year to address crime related issues including mental health.
The local theme is “Standing with the Blue” which is new. This year, the celebration is about the heroes in law enforcement and public safety, and the law-abiding citizens who make the choice to follow the law and to take actions to keep Carson City safe – a community in unity.
The event was launched by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong as part of the community policing efforts implemented by his administration and has grown into a highly anticipated event.
“Carson City, National Night represents more than crime reduction, but also community unity and acknowledgment of all our public safety, non-profits, and businesses working together in unity,” said Sheriff Ken Furlong. “National Night Out calls for a single night around the world when we give crime the boot, and reinforce community health, safety and welfare.”
The event will include hot dogs, soda and water provided by local donations, DJ music and emcees, music by Dan Kim of Rock-It Productions, face painting, balloons, prizes and surprises. There will be equipment, hands on activities, a few surprises and lots of giveaways.
National Night Out is an exceptionally special event, as it is an interactive event where officers and agencies offer innovative activities for people of all ages to participate in. These include games, safety demonstrations and meet and greets with personnel from SWAT, the gang unit task force, the CCSO Special Enforcement Team, K-9, the fire department, BLM, military, Department of Public Safety, and more. Children and families can play and learn about crime, substance abuse and safety, as well as become acquainted with those community agencies and officers who aid and help people when they are called.
“The free event is for the entire community,” said CCSO Deputy Lisa Davis, the event's coordinator. “Standing with the Blue is exciting because we are going to focus on the good in this city,” continued Davis. “Everything starts with a choice and there are a lot of people in Carson City who make good choices every day who stand with us and that is something to celebrate.”
In Carson City, National Night Out is paid for by the sheriff’s office, a small justice assistance grant, use of City property, and donations. It is a large event that literally runs on a shoe string budget. This event has grown over the years and it costs money to keep up with that growth. Carson City Sheriff’s Office strives continually to build strong positive bonds between law enforcement, youth and the community. We hope you join us!
