Fishing Report for the week of June 15-21

CARSON CITY — Here is the fishing report for Northern Nevada, Northern California, and the Sierra for the week of June 15-June 21.

BISHOP AREA, CALIF:
Rick and Patti Apted - Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425) www.lakesabrinaboatlanding.com) reports:
Sabrina Lake: Could it actually be that Summer is here? We woke to a dusting of that cold white stuff on Monday (and I was a bit worried) – we can only hope that will be it for at least a couple of months. It seems temps are a bit warmer – the Lake rose about 5 feet since Monday, so it looks like the run-off has started.
Fishing, this week remains good – hard to believe with as many fish as we have seen come out since the Opener.
Trolling is slow (Rick and I were out last night – got a few bumps, but nothing on the hook!).
Still fishing or fishing from shore is working the best and it’s been working the best with baits.
Fishing has been really excellent back at the DingleBerry Inlet and the rainbows are starting to spawn.
Mitch Beltran of Chino landed a native beaut (wasn’t stalked by DFG or Alpers) – a 3-3/4 pounder on a nightcrawler – way to go, Mitch – not many of those get that big.
Chad Martin of Chalfant picked up a nice dinner for the family using the (tried and true) Red and Gold Thomas Buoyant and crickets and a bubble (pick up your crickets at either Culvers’ Sporting Goods or Mac’s Sporting Goods in Bishop.
The North Lake road is now open although we haven’t had a report from anyone on the actual conditions of said road – just take it easy. In fact, take it easy on all the mountain roads, the deer are on the move.
Not sure about the campground up there yet, but all the other campgrounds are open and ready for your camping experience. The only campground to take reservations is Four Jeffery www.reserveamerica.com and enter Four Jeffrey) all others are first come first serve. There is a full hook-up campground also on the South Lake road, Creekside RV Park.
Max, alias ‘HOOK-NOSE’, had a bit of an experience this week, a hook in the nose – he was doing the dog thing and sniffin’ at an old Rapala, he took a GOOD sniff and one of the hooks from the treble broke off and went part way up his nose – he and Rick were off to the Sierra Vet Clinic the next morning for a bit of surgery – Thanks, Kathy and the Crew! Lo will probably be getting his Lion-do soon – just have to find the time.
Almost forgot to mention, the best bunch of kids and parents you’d ever want to meet will be in town this week for the ‘California High School Rodeo State Finals Championship’. They’ve been coming to Bishop since 2005 and it’s always a pleasure when they come to the Lake – most go fishing with their spurs on!

So if you’ve caught your limit at the Lake and are looking for something to do – head on over to the Tri-County Fairgrounds. They’ll be in action throughout the week during the day starting Tuesday to Friday with the finals scheduled as follows:

2011 CHSRA State Finals Rodeo Schedule:
Tuesday, 7pm - Patriotic Night...Wear Red, White & Blue!
Wednesday, 7am - Cutting
Wednesday, 7pm - Family Night/ $20 For Entire Family
Thursday, 7am - Cutting
Thursday, 7pm - ESBCA Benefit Night...Wear Pink!
Friday, 9am - Cutting Finals
Friday, 7pm - State Finals

The temps are on the rise – highs expected to be in the mid 60s with the low 40s -  You can check www.weather.gov and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather or check in with Howard at www.mammothweather.com.
REMEMBER A JACKET – IT TENDS TO BE BETWEEN 25 AND 30 DEGREES COOLER AT THE LAKE.

It’s also time for the 2nd annual “LUAU” in the Mountain at Bishop Creek Lodge (BCL). It’s June 25th at 4:00pm. The cost is $35 per person and includes all you can eat deep pit pig, Mai Tai’s, fresh fruit with other highlights being a hula contest, limbo contest and best dressed.
Call BCL at (760) 873-4484 to reserve your tickets now!
And, of course, we'll have HOMEMADE pie, sodas, beer, wine, coffee, tea and hot cocoa during our regular store hours!

BISHOP AREA, CALIF:
Jared Smith - Parcher’s Resort (760-873-4177) sierrasmitty@cebridge.net:
Just a quick update…
1. The road to North Lake is now open! Hoooray!
2. Southern California Edison reduced the flow on the So. Fork Bishop Creek today at 1 pm – normal flows on the creek now. Hooray!
Great news on all fronts.
South Lake: It's official folks - the spring runoff has begun! The weather has been fantastic all week and the forecast for next week is even better. The inlet to South Lake is absolutely raging right now and the lake has come up at least 6 ft this week, most of that in the last 2 days.
The water clarity at the lake is improving by the day and not surprisingly, so is the fishing.
The bite on the browns especially has been good on Thomas Bouyants and Rapala CD-1 or CD-3's.
White mini-jigs are the ticket for Rainbows and the average size is around a pound. Fishing is still on the slow side but conditions are improving fast.
South Fork Bishop Creek: Flows remain high on the South Fork but folks are really doing well in the slower moving pools and deep pockets. More solid 2lb+ rainbows along with plenty of pan sized stockers are filling stringers.
Crowds are uncharacteristically light for this late in June so the anglers that are here are having no trouble finding a sweet spot on the creek. Nightcrawlers, mini-jigs, Panther Martins and Thomas Bouyants are producing best.
Adopt-a-Creek stocked another dose of trophies last week and the result was more heavy fish weighed in at the resort. This program is underfunded this season so we encourage fans of the Bishop Creek Drainage to chip in and support them. Donations can be submitted online at http://adoptacreek.org/

North Lake: The road to North Lake is apparently still closed, which is a mystery to most of the folks hiking up there as the road is totally clear of snow and rocks. Hopefully it will open shortly. From what I'm hearing, if you bring orange Power Worms and nightcrawlers, you'd have to try not to limit out.
Middle Fork Bishop Creek: More Alpers 2 to 3 lb range reported early in the week, along with limit style fishing for those putting in the time. Salmon eggs and worms are doing best.

Weir Pond: Same as last week....wide open. On the fly or using spinning gear, folks are just killin' it. Jigs, Midges, Nymphs, Woolly Buggers, Kastmasters and Thomas Bouyants are all working great.
No bigguns reported this week but I did talk to a pair of guys that spent most of the day at the Weir and reported catching & releasing 150 fish over the course of the day...not too shabby.
Remember folks, if you're going to practice catch and release, please use artificial lures and flies - releasing gut hooked or bleeding fish is a waste...and the artificials are working better anyway.

Intake II:
Only a few reports this week but all of the reports were very positive. Good fishing on pan sized stockers was reported by both bait and lure anglers. Salmon Peach Power Bait, salmon eggs and Berkley Atomic Tubes best.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) www.kenssport.com reports:
The reservoir has been off the hook this week! It seemed like a couple days ago we had a few reports that were just so-so but this last couple days have been excellent. Lots of fish in the 1 to 2 pounds range lately with a good number of 2 to 4 pounders are being taken.
Trolling with blades/crawlers, Thomas Bouyants and excel lures has been good. Fly anglers are doing well stripping streamers like seal buggers and Hornbergs as well as Midging with Zebras, Callibaetis and soft hackles.
Bait anglers having a great time with crawlers, Power Bait and gulp eggs.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) www.thetroutfitter.com reports:
Water Conditions: Water temps in the mid 50's.
Fishing Conditions: Fishing is really picking up now with warmer weather in store!
Check out Robinson Creek Inlet.

CARSON RIVER, CALIF:
East Carson River: High, fast and muddy.
West Carson River: High, fast and muddy.

COMINS LAKE, WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife www.ndow.org reports:
A few bass have been showing up, but no trout due to the pike infestation.Pike fishing has also been poor. There are few if any trout left in the lake also due to the pike infestation.

CONVICT LAKE, CALIF:
Jen Heintzelman of Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260) www.convictlakeresort.com reports:
Catch of the Week: Scott & Faith Pfutx catch a 23 Inch, 3 lb. 14 oz. trout with unique coloration on YUM TroutKrilla Bait!  They caught their stringer at the Handicap Pier a new location that looks pretty productive.
Weather:

I think that summer is really here! Daytime highs this week will be in the 60's and 70's, lows in the 40's. Sunny all week as well!  Feel free to call us for a real-time weather report. Here is a local site that is usually quite accurate www.mammothweather.com.

Tactics/Bait: YUM TroutKrilla Bait, Power Bait and nightcrawlers have been the most productive baits this week.
Fish have been caught at Hangman's Tree, Inlet, Handicap Pier, North and South Shores this week. Other locations to try are the creek and jetty.
Here is a list of other baits that are good to try: Rapala, Trout Teasers, Midges, Panther Martin, Thomas Bouyants, Green Woolly Bugger, White Mini Jig and Garlic Power Bait.
Trolling with down riggers 3- 6 colors or 20-50 feet is a depth range to try.
Stocking:
DFG stocked this week. Convict Lake will be stocking another 100 lbs of Alper's Rainbow this week for the Father's Day Derby.
Sunrise - Sunset:
Sunrise this week 5:32 am - 5:33 am.
Sunset 8:14 pm - 8:16 pm.
Derby News: We have 194 entries and 84 fish entered into the drawing for $6,000 in resort prizes for the Round-up at the Lake fishing derby.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:

Water Conditions: Temps in the mid to upper 50's as of 6/9.
Fishing Conditions: Fish being caught at Sandy Point, Big Hilton, and Leighton Springs in about 13-14 ft of water.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) www.performanceanglers.com reports:
The sunshine and calm wind finally arrived on Wednesday of last week. Fishing however still remains on the slow side. Some limited action at Sandy Point and Pelican Point in 13-15 feet of water, Gray or black midge pupa or Stevie's M-80.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Tom Loe of Sierra Drifters Fly Fishing Guide Service (760-935-4250) www.sierradrifters.com reports:
Hi there Friends and Sierra Drifters, TwoBugDoug here filling in for both T-Loe and Doug Rodricks as they are guiding up at  Eagle Lake this month.
As for the Sierras, well it’s what we have all been waiting for, some warmer spring like weather up here in our beautiful Sierras and I must say....It’s about time. So, pack your sunscreen and bug repellent on your next trip up here and let the lip ripping begin.
Hanging some fish and ripping lots of lips is exactly what seems to be a developing pattern out here on Crowley Lake this last week.
As warmer temperatures heat the Sierras, so does the water of the lake and that is all it takes for our fish to start moving into the 9-15 feet of water feeding vigorously on Midges.
We have had some very consistent times with our Under-cators getting pulled down hard with fish averaging 16-18 inches and many in the 20-22 inch range as well.
We have been hanging most of these fish at Sandy Pt. in 13-15 feet of water and seeing fish caught in 9-12 feet to.
Seems Midges in size 18-20 grey and black colors are working best.
Layton Springs, Big Hilton and Pelican Pt. are holding good numbers of fish as well.
As the weather forecast predicts temperatures to get into the 70s and low 80s this next couple of weeks, fishing conditions will only improve out on Crowley. This means more of the larger Rainbows and Browns will become targets to our custom fly patterns.
It’s a good time to start planning a trip to Crowley or book a trip with us and let these big Crowley Fish show you that stuff behind your fly line we call backing.....they will do that.
We hope to Fish Ya Soon,
— TwoBugDoug, Sierra Drifters Guide Service

PLENTY OF WATER!
The flows coming down to 9,000 CFS and then going back to 10,000 CFS, which means it will stir things up a bit for trout anglers working the Redding area. Down below, there are stripers strung out all the way from Colusa down to Sacramento and beyond.
The trick is moving around a lot and staying with the fish which seem to be moving all over the place with the weather and changing flows.
Typical stripers: here today, gone tomorrow!

North Shore: We’ve been getting easy limits of Mackinaw (Lake) Trout (2-18 pounds).
We have been trolling at The Tavern Hole, Cal Neva Point, Dollar Point and Sugar Pine Point, 110-220 feet deep, with either Dodgers and minnows or Dodgers and large Trophy Stick lures.
Monday morning, I had Kevin Law and Don Quilici, both of Carson City.
We trolled 160-260 feet deep with silver flashers and minnows at Cal Neva Point. The weather was gorgeous (no wind!) and the fishing was superb for easy limits of Macks up to 8 pounds.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF:

Upper Twin Lake: Power Bait of all colors and scents seem to be working well.
Dylan Sakelarios from Carson City used yellow for his 3-pound rainbow.
Yellow Power Bait worked for a 2-pound rainbow for John Willhalm, also of Carson City.

Lots of anglers, trolling with flashers and nightcrawlers, coming in with stringers of pan-sized rainbows.

TWIN LAKES AREA, CALIF:

Upper Twin Lake – Lower Twin Lake – Robinson Creek:
The Twins have been fishing well with bait and trolling.
Small Rapalas, Thomas Bouyants, excel lures and Needlefish have all been doing well, also crawlers, Power Bait and Power Eggs have been catching some nice fish.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) www.kenssport.com reports:
The ice on Little Virginia is no longer safe to be out on and I'd expect it to break up within the next week enough to start fishing it from the shore or tubes. The ice on Big Virginia is still around 20 inches thick but I would recommend extreme caution going out on it as the weather is much warmer now and it will be melting daily.

WALKER LAKE, MINERAL COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife www.ndow.org reports:
No fish have been reported or seen at Walker Lake so far this fishing season.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) www.kenssport.com reports:
East Walker – West Walker – Sceirine Ranch - Hunewill Pond:
East Walker River: The East is up to 590 CFS this weekend. It's running pretty fast but there's still some anglers having good success down there.
The Caddis are becoming more active lately. We haven't heard much about streamers this past few days, but small Midges and Caddis Nymphs have been doing well. It's very important to get your Nymphs down towards the bottom right now with the higher flows so don't be shy about adding plenty of weight. Also be sure to have a large enough indicator to carry that weight.
Buckskin Caddis, Fox's Poopah, flashback Emergers, San Juan Worms are among the patterns that are doing well.
We haven't heard much from the Rosachi section in Nevada this week but there should be some fishable water even with the high flows.
West Walker River: The West is running very fast with the current snow melt we've been having but we have had a couple good reports here and there. It sounds like you'll need to search out some of the calmer spots in the river and get your bait or lures down near the bottom in them. There are fish stacked up in some of the slower water that are easy pickens once you find them.
Sceirine Ranch: The ranch has been fishing about like the Cali side this past week, fly patterns are less specific and slightly larger.
Copper Johns, Princes, Hare's Ears, Birds Nests and San Juans have all been working. As on the Cali side, add plenty of weight and use larger indicators.
Hunewill Pond: Haven't had anyone on the pond yet, will post report as soon as we have one!

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) www.thetroutfitter.com reports:
East Walker River Water Conditions:  Flows at a raging 524 CFS as of 6/3 as they lower the res to get ready for that melting white stuff up high. Some discoloration but still good fishing.
Fishing Conditions: Tough. High flows make it a cleats and wading staff kind of deal.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) www.performanceanglers.com reports:
East Walker River: Water flow 590 CFS. Water flow jumped up on Thurs. Approach with caution as at this flow the river is very treacherous.
Nymph fish with gray or black Midge pupa,WD-40's and  Prince Nymphs.

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK AREA, CALIF:
The Tioga Pass Highway (California S.R. 120) to Yosemite (from the east side) is still closed. Tioga Pass has an elevation of 9,943 feet, making it the highest automobile pass in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
