Public workshop to address Carson City's recreational marijuana regulations
Carson City will hold a public workshop next week to discuss possible zoning and business license regulations for recreational marijuana establishments.
The Tuesday, June 20 workshop will be held at the Carson City Community Center Sierra Room at 5 p.m. The meeting is designed to provide information on the laws relating to marijuana and to get feedback from the public regarding the concerns and issues that may need to be addressed by law enforcement, health services and others.
Voters passed legal recreational marijuana in Nevada through a 2016 ballot measure. The legislation allows counties to regulate recreational marijuana establishments through business license and zoning provisions, which may include banning such facilities altogether. However, banning the facilities that grow and dispense recreational marijuana does not prohibit the possession and use of marijuana in any city or county, which is now permitted by State law.
Only medical marijuana establishments are currently permitted in Carson City, including cultivation facilities and two dispensaries. Recreational marijuana establishments are currently prohibited in Carson City under a moratorium pending the adoption of applicable regulations.
During the workshop, a representative of the Nevada Association of Counties (NACO) is scheduled to provide an overview of the legal framework surrounding recreational marijuana, including the voter initiative and regulations passed during the 2017 State Legislative session. Representatives from the drug and health counseling sector as well as representatives from the marijuana industry will also be present to provide information and answer questions.
For additional information regarding the workshop, contact Lee Plemel, Community Development Director at (775) 283-7075 or lplemel@carson.org.
