April unemployment in Carson City falls to 7.7 percent, down from 9 percent last year
The April unemployment rate in Carson City fell to 7.7 percent, down from 7.8 percent in March and 9 percent last year, according to Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
The statewide unemployment rate fell to a seasonally adjusted 7.1 percent in April. Just as Nevada unemployment rate saw a decline, so did each of the state’s metropolitan statistical areas. The Reno-Sparks area unemployment rate fell from 6.9 percent in March to 6.7 percent in April, which is down from 7.8 percent a year ago.
Las Vegas’ rate dropped to 7.1 percent, down from 7.2 percent in March and down from 8 percent in April 2014.
All industries experienced job growth with the two major metropolitan areas adding more jobs than expected, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Las Vegas added a seasonally adjusted 7,600 jobs in April, while the Reno Sparks area added a seasonally adjusted 1,400 jobs. Statewide a seasonally adjusted 12,800 jobs were added.
“The metropolitan statistical areas are showing similar improvement to what the Silver State is experiencing as a whole,” Anderson said. “With more people joining the labor force, the unemployment rate is not experiencing the decline we would hope for, however this suggests more people are confident in the labor market and are now looking for work."
