‘El Camino Donuts’ takes over vacant 'Gather' location in downtown Carson City

A new donut shop, El Camino Donuts, will be taking over the location left vacant by Gather in the Downtown Carson City area, bringing “old school donuts” made by a husband and wife team.

Clint Goodrich, co-owner of El Camino Donuts, recently moved to Carson City with a donut shop dream after “draconian” COVID restrictions in Albuquerque, New Mexico forced El Camino’s original location to relocate to Carson City, which they had long had their eyes on.

“We had tried to come here a few years ago, and we’re so happy to be here since this is where we wanted to be in the first place,” said Goodrich. “My wife and I have always preferred historic and downtown types of settings as opposed to (urban) sprawl or strip malls. We’ve always gravitated toward a close-knit, downtown type of community where people are doing more walking, taking advantage of downtown events. We love that atmosphere.”

What sets El Camino apart from other donut and pastry locations, said Goodrich, is that he and his wife are hands-on owner-operators who “do things their own way.”

“We do everything ourselves,” said Goodrich. “We make everything ourselves, produce everything ourselves, so we know exactly what’s going into the bakery case. We take more time, everything is made fresh everyday, nothing is frozen, prepackaged or pre-made. We make donuts of years' past before everything started becoming ‘fast-food.’”

El Camino Donuts, which is located at 402 N. Carson Street, is hoping for a June 1 opening but that date may be unlikely due to COVID-19 making processing times a bit longer. However, they do expect to open sometime between June 1 and June 15.
