NDOT to suspend State Route 28 construction at Tahoe for July 4 holiday period
CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Transportation announced that work on the State Route 28 shared used path south of Incline Village at Lake Tahoe will be on hold during the entire Fourth of July holiday week, July 2-6.
NDOT and Granite Construction crews may conduct minor work along the path if conditions allow; however, traffic control will not be in place. To ensure safety while the pathway is under construction, it will remain closed to the public.
The Memorial Point parking lot and restroom will also remain closed. Recreationists are encouraged to access beaches and trails through designated recreation and parking areas off of the roadside.
Leading up to the holiday as traffic flow allows, work will occur through Friday, June 29. Motorists should anticipate delays of 20 to 30 minutes with one-lane flagger-controlled closures in multiple locations.
After the holiday week, the schedule will resume Sunday night through Friday afternoon with flagger-controlled single lane closures 24 hours a day. With potential travel delays, drivers are encouraged to allow for extra time to reach their destination, and to be aware of vehicle fueling/charging stations before entering work zones.
The multi-year project will build a three-plus mile shared use path from the southern end of Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park. Three new parking areas near the Ponderosa Ranch and Tunnel Creek Café will also provide safer parking options.
More than 2.5 million vehicles a year travel on State Route 28, mixing with as many as 2,000 pedestrians and bicyclists who park and recreate near the roadside on peak days, creating safety and accessibility concerns on the mountain highway. The additional pathway and parking areas will enhance safety and mobility for everyone on the roadway.
