Gusty winds, hot temperatures prompt Red Flag warning for Carson City region
With hot, dry conditions and gusty winds expected to arrive in the Carson City region Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service has issued a red flag fire weather warning, the second one this week.
Conditions will be similar to Monday with gusts from 25 to 35 mph south of Highway 50 and possibly higher into the Susanville area of northeast Calif. Humidity is expected fall into the single digits and teens again making for widespread critical fire weather conditions.
The Red Flag warning is from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. and covers areas from Topaz Lake to Carson Valley into Carson City, Dayton, and Reno areas, the Sierra Front range and Central Nevada Basin.
The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting or campfires.
Follow local fire restrictions. Check weather.gov/reno for updates and livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.
Daytime high temperatures for Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton and Reno areas will be in the low to mid 90s. For Thursday and Friday, high temperatures will cool considerably from early this week to the low to mid 80s, according to the National Weather Service.
The weekend is expected to warm up some with Saturday's highs in the upper 80s and Sunday in the low 90s.
